Three Year Old Recovers from Gun Wound to the Head

On August 4, 2015, three year old Darnal Mundy had climbed out of his parents bed in the middle of the night. Somehow the little boy got a hold of his father’s gun and shot himself in the head. The bullet had entered the center of his head and exited out the back left side. Due to a large blood clot and swelling of the brain the Doctors had to remove the left side of Darnal’s skull. One nurse that had worked at the hospital for eighteen years said, “I’ve hardly seen children ever survive a gunshot wound to the head.” But Darnal survived the odds. The little boy spent three weeks in a coma before waking up. He wasn’t able to talk or walk. After spending nearly three months in a rehabilitation hospital with therapy three hours a day the little boy has made a remarkable recovery. He has learned how to breathe on his own again, has started talking, and walking by himself. This week the little boy will be released from the hospital and will get to spend his fourth birthday at home.

My thoughts: I would be devastated if my child shot themselves in the head, especially if they were using my gun. As far as the procedure of handling a gun wound, I always thought you applied pressure until help arrived. You’re also supposed to get them to a hospital ASAP.

What would you do if it was your child that had shot themselves?

Do you know the proper procedure to handling a gun wound?

  • Well done Emma!

  • I don't know all the details of how exactly he got the gun, but when your three year old son can get a hold of your gun then you should keep it locked away better. It is things like this that are common mistakes that people make when owning a firearm. Politicians crucify stories like this and say how i"f they didn't have a gun then this wouldn't happen and how we need to get rid of firearms." That is not the problem with this story. The problem is how the owner was keeping the gun out of access of the child. And I doubt that a three year old knows how to load a weapon so I am assuming that it was loaded. That is not a good idea either. You need to keep the weapon and the ammunition locked away.

    • I agree, if you own a gun then you need to be responsible and put the gun and ammo somewhere that others can't get to it.

  • I am a supporter of having firearms in the household. However, I do believe they should be locked in some sort of gun case...especially if there are young children in the house. This would not have happened if that had been the case.

  • This is very sad, yet very enlightening at the same time. I am sure that the parents are ecstatic that their son is okay, but they should have some guilt shadowing over them because of what happened. The gun should be in their hands, not his. I would panic if it happened to my child and would rush them to the Emergency Room immediately.

    • I would panic as well, but I don't think I would be calm enough to drive them myself. I would probably call 911. Your also right about the gun, the parents should have been responsible enough to lock the gun away.

  • I would feel really sad if my child shot themselves in the head especially if they got a hold of my gun. As far as a gun wound procedure goes I know that you are supposed to put pressure on the wound but I am not really sure on how to care for a head wound other then get them to the hospital fast.

    • I would be so guilty if my child got a hold of my gun. I would feel like the worse parent in the world.

  • I would be in shock if my child or anyone in my family had shot themselves. I would immediately do whatever I could to help them, whether that be taking them to the hospital or calling 911. I do not know the proper procedure for handling a gun wound, but it would definitely be very useful information to learn!

  • I would be devastated if I found my child on the ground because they shot themselves.  I would call for help right away.  I all I know about gunshot wounds is that you are too hold pressure on the wound.
