Theodore Roosevelt Taking Office

September 14 1901 Theodore Roosevelt took office after the assassination of President William McKinley. Theodore Roosevelt is known as the first modern president. Before Roosevelt congress was by far the most powerful branch of the government. Roosevelt changed that he believed that the president could use all the powers bestowed upon him unless told not to. This meant that he could serve the people much more efficiently than previous presidents. Roosevelt also strengthened foreign affairs and worked on making the navy much bigger. He also negotiated the construction of the Panama Canal. Roosevelt would have probably never become president if McKinley wasn’t assassinated do you think it was good in the long run that it happened or do you think that nothing could compensate for the assassination of the 25th President William Mckinley.

  • Luke,

Overall your summary is brief for something worth 100 points. Be sure to expand more next time. Also, pick a topic that is more controversial next time. • Obviously no one wants someone to be assinated, but in the long run, Theodore Roosevelt did some positive things as president of the United States. I don't know what president William McKinley did or how good or bad of a president he was, but good did come from the terrible tradegy that was his death due to Roosevelt taking his place.

  • I think it was good in the long run for America when Roosevelt made the Navy bigger it helped us so much back then and then it would help us in both world wars and even today. I don't know what President William would have done and maybe he would've done the same things or done things different, we will never no but everthing in life happens for a reason.

  • Of course I do not think it is good that President William McKinley was killed but in the long run America did benefit from Theodore Roosevelt being president. We will never know what could or would have happened if President Mckinley was not killed. Maybe he had ideas that would have changed our country but there is no way of knowing. President Roosevelt probably never expected for President William to be killed and was shocked as everyone else, but he had to do a job and I believe it was a job well done.

    • I totally agree. Roosevelt did a great job as president. He really did step up to the plate and took his best shot and ended up hitting a grand slam. But for all we know McKinley could have done even better I guess the world may never know.

  • I definetly don't think that the killing of President Mckinely was a good event in history, but I do think that everything happens for a reason. President Roosevelt defenitly stepped up and took very good care of the United States of America. It would of been interesting to see what would of happened otherwise.

    • I also think that is was not a good event. but it is hard to argue that it didn't make a huge impact on our country. I do wonder what the world would be like if Leon Czolgosz didn't kill President McKinley as well ,but we will have to live with the fact that we will never know.
