The UK Is Moving to Regulate Their Internet

Recently, the web's inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee has called for action in order to address a string of problems that the internet has been causing. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also recently came to the public and spoke out about being in favor of strict regulations concerning the internet. The UK government has been listening to these calls from both Berners-lee and Zuckerberg, and has been trying to make a move to push for stricter internet rules. There are so many tragic stories of bullying, harassment, self harm, suicide, child sexual abuse, as well as promoting terrorism and and promotion of violent crimes, which are linked to the internet. In our day and age, interent makes it extremely easy for people to cause harm to someone's life, and have lifetime effects on not only them, but also their families. After being bystanders on all the damage the internet has caused people, the UK government has stated that it is quite clear that the self-regulation tech companies have provided is failing. To them, further regulations are crucial in order to provide safety for everyone. While these regulations would greatly upset many people, it would end up impacting the overall population in a positive way. To read more about this topic click here!

Do you think having stricter regulations would help keep online- users safer?
- Personally, I think that it would help all the hate caused by the internet to reduce and keep people safe.

Do you think that putting regulations on the internet would reduce the amount of time people spend online?
- I believe that the people who are guilty of comitting terrible things via the internet, would be forced to do less damage since regulations would be put in place.

  • Well done Camilla! Try to stay away from yes/no questions.

  • I too think that regulating what users see and put out on the internet will make it a safer place for everyone to use but at the same time content should not be censored. Many things that people may be interested in could be censored due to bias of media. I think that it could actually increase the amount of time seeing as parents would allow their children to use it knowing its safer

  • I think it would help reduce the mount of online bullying there is in the world today. I think putting regulations on the internet wouldn't help as reduce the amount of time people spend on the internet because they would most likely find another way to get the stuff they want.

  • 1.) Personally, I do not think that it would help because people would just create similar sites and those sites would eventually become more popular because the others were restricted and the same problem would just occure again.

2.) I do believe for a certain amount of time it would reduce the amount of time people spend online because for a while they would have no reason to be online because all their sites are restricted from them.

  • I also believe that stricter rules will keep people safer and help with the hate caused by the internet.  I think that the amount of time spent on the internet might go down a little, but it will probably stay the same or continue to increase, but this will just make it safer.

    • Like I have said before, I agree with that fact that stricter regulations would push for a more safe online environment for a lot of people. The time spent would maybe go down for awhile and then people would go back to it.

  • I agree with you, most people get depressed and that leads to other things due to online bullying. It would keep away strangers that are not supposed to be talking to you or anyone. I believe that people won't be able to do the things that they want online due to strict policies causing people to log off.

    • So true, with everything that goes on online, many people end up suffering from mental illnesses like depression and anxiety. Many people get harrassed and regulations would definately help reduce that.

  • I don't think stricter regulations will have much of a difference because it will be super hard to enforce and stop all the harrasment, and other things going on. Yes, stricter regulations would keep them off the internet but that means that really bad people would be out in public more which could lead to more disasters.

    • I disagree with you. Stricter regulations would somehow be incorperated into a law, there are plenty of law-abiding citizens who would respect and follow it. Of course there are some people who will find ways around it, but overall it would help keep more people safe.
