The Story Behind "Drivers License"

Drivers License is a song written and sang by Olivia Rodrigo. Olivia Rodrigo is a 17 year old girl who made a name for herself as a disney channel actress. She started in two shows, one being a comedy called Bizaardvark, and the other was a drama called High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. In the lyrics she talks about being sad because the boy she loves is in love with another girl. The lyrics state, “And you're probably with that blonde girl, Who always made me doubt,” which tell us about the girl. The meaning behind the name of the song, “Drivers License,” was about her just getting her drivers license, and driving around the suburbs, being sad, and thinking about him. However, that was just the general background for the song. Who it is written about, is a whole other story.

Now you might be wondering who the song is about. Much like many other love or breakup songs, fans are quick to try to figure out what the song is about and who the people are in the song. Many fans have guessed that the song is about none other than her co-star in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Joshua Bassett, and his new girlfriend, Sabrina Carpenter. The two co-stars were rumored to be dating off of the set of their tv show, but neither of them confirmed anything. Fans immediately thought the song was about Bassett because of the lyric, “Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me.” Bassett’s song “Anyone Else” was rumored to be about Rodrigo. Fans also think Rodrigo is talking about Carpenter because her lyrics say “that blonde girl” and “she’s so much older than me.” Carpenter is blonde, and is 20, which makes her 3 years older than Rodrigo.

The song has led people to believe that Bassett broke Ridrigos heart, and left her for Carpenter. There have also been many other small clues that tell us the song really is about her co-star. Some of the clues include a lyric change, a post on instagram, and the fact that Bassett allegedly taught Rodrigo how to drive. A handful of the fans don’t think the song has anything to do with Bassett and Carpenter because both actors are being friendly with another. Although they could just be acting like nothing is happening for the sake of their tv show. Overall none of this has been confirmed, and it is completely possible that Rodigo’s song isn’t actually about anything. However, all facts seem to point to yes. Do you think that the song is about Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter, or do you think all the fans are overreacting?

Personally, I think that the song is about Joshua, but ony because of all the evidence that fans have ointed out. To me it seems really obvious, but no one really knows the truth.

Have you listened to the song? If you have, what did you think if it and why?

I have listened to the song many times, and I really like it. I think it has a really nice melody, and it's very enjoyable for me to listen to.

  • Interesting topic and one I knew nothing about. Good job overall Lauren! You could have replied a few more times to get to nine comments as you have three pages of comments.

  • I agree with you and believe this song is about Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter. I have listened to this popular song many times and agree that there are many hints pointing towards these two in the song. This song is full of emotion and makes it easy for us to believe it would have to be about those two. I think usually artists write about their own personal experiences and what effects them. This makes it very easy for us to assume that this song is about those two. I really like this song too and I think it is very popular because lots of teenagers can relate to these lyrics.

    • I have to say that all the clues point towards Joshua and Sabrina, but it is also hard for people to remember that nothing has been confirmed. There is still a lot more information coming out everyday, and I agree that many people can relate to the song in one way or another.

  • After listening to the song, I feel that it’s about Joshua and Sabrina. All the hints add up and it just makes sense for the song to be about those two. I have listened to the song, I think it’s good. Although, I do feel that it gets more attention than needed. When I listened to it I had higher expectations because of how popular it is, but it's still a good song.

  • In my opinion the song doesn't even have to apply to you and you can still listen to it alot. I myself have listened to it quite a bit and it's a really good song. Not just the lyrics, but like her voice and the melody in general. Hearing the lyrics I do think it applies to Basset and Carpenter. I'm only saying that because of all of the proof I've seen and I personally think it couldn't apply to anyone else. It can't just be coincidental.

    • I agree completely, and some people will relate more to the song than others, but that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy the song. I personally really like her voice in the song, and I also agree that all the evidence can't just be a coincident.

  • I believe that the song "Drivers License" is about her co-star Joshua Basset & Sabrina Carpenters relationship, because like you said before there are many signs in the song that point to Sabrina Carpenter such as her "blonde hair" and "older than me" just like Sabrina. I have listened to this song many times also, and it is a very catchy sad song that is fun to listen to.

  • I have listened to this song about 1,000 times since it was released. I was also watching a lot of videos on tik tok trying to figure out what it was about. I personally think that the song is about Bassett and Carpenter. The lyrics point to it being about him along with some other things I have seen so far.

  • Personally I do think the song is directed towards Carpenter and Bassett. I think that some fans have definitely taken it too far like giving Bassett and Carpenter hate on social media, but Rodrigo could not control this behavior. I have listened to the song and I thought it was very good. It has a very nice melody with catchy words that are easy to remember. Personally I think it is a great song to listen to all the time.

  • I totally think the song is about Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter. The reason I think this is because the lyrics of the song make it pretty obvious especially with the lyrics “And you're probably with that blonde girl, Who always made me doubt.” Which those lyrics pretty obviously are pointed at Sabrina.
