The Start of the Olympics

Everyone knows what the Olympics are; a sports competition between countries all across the world. The Olympic games have been around for a long, long time, the first modern Olympic game being held in 1896, but even then, it dates back millennia before that. The first recorded olympic games were in 776 B.C.E. in Olympia, a place in the ancient Greek Empire in the city-state of Elis. Even then, it is believed that the games have been held 500 years before that, but just were never recorded.

The Olympics were held every four years, like they are today, to be part of a religious festival worshiping Zeus. The games were a small ceremony at first, but over time grew into something much bigger. The games started with roughly a dozen city-states in Greece participation, but later on grew to as much as 100. The games started with only foot races, but with the growth of contestants came the expansion of competitions. They added wrestling, horse and chariot racing, and military competitions. Later on after, they also added discus tosses, javelin throwing, and long jumps.

The games were abolished in 393 C.E. when the Roman’s took over. They were stopped as part of the Romans, who were catholic, trying to be rid of all paganism. However, when the Renaissance came around, people were fascinated with the old Greek culture. A french barron interested in Greece proposed to start the games up again. After giving his idea to an international sports council, his idea got approved. From there, they went on to hold the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 at the Greek Capital of Athens.

  • Well done Madison!

  • I watch the olympics sometimes, not a lot though. It cool to watch all the amazing athlets that trained so hard to go that far. I like watching any event, there all cool to see and theres so meny you can watch.

  • I do watch the olymics sometimes, I am not a fanatic of the olympics, but I think it is sometimes cool to see the athletes because they are pretty much the best ever in the world. I like to watch the races in the olymics because the people that are running are crazy fast and it is super cool to see.

  • I personally do not watch all of theolympic sports every 4 years when they come around but I do watch some of the events. I personally prefer to watch the summer olympics over the winter olympics  just because it feel their are more sports/events to watch rather than the winter ones.

  • I personally do not watch the olympics, but if I were to watch it I think I would watch basketball, track or maybe boxing if I were to watch it because I would be able to find them interesting. My favorite I think would have to be track because it is so many things in one and the races always seem to be interesting.

    • Very fair! Watching sports isn't everyone's cup of tea. I'm not a crazy big sports fan myself, but I do enjoy watching a few competitions like ice skating, gymnastic, and sometimes snowboarding and swimming. Even then I don't keep up regularly, I'll just stick around if they're on.

  • I watch the Olympics when the come around every 4 years but I haven't been a serious Olympic watcher I only watch because they come around every 4 years. My favorite sport in the Olympics is the Javilin throw because I think its cool how they throw a huge stick that far.

  • Yes, I enjoy watching the Olympics because I like to watch basketball and snowboarding. It's awesome watching all of the best players of basketball verse each other in a game or watching the best snowboarding compete against each other, but my favorite olympic sport is snowboarding.

  • I watch the summer Olympics mostly. I don't do anything for it though. I just stay home and watch it. My favorite Olympic sport is swimming because I am a swimmer. Also, Michael Phelps is one of the best swimmers and I think that he's one of the best Olympic Athletes.

    • Michael Phelps is deffinantly an icon to competitive swimmers. The summer games are interesting, but I most deffinantly prefer the winter Olympics. It's mainly for the figure skating, but I also enjoy watching the snowboarders compete with each other.
