As of Tuesday, September 3, 2019, Hurricane Dorian has been reported to be a Category 2 storm, but is still known to be dangerous. Before reaching Florida, Hurricane Dorian ripped through the Bahamas, killing 7 people. On Wednesday, at 3 AM, the Hurricane Center reported that the rain bands were moving closer onshore in the northeast. Ken Graham, the director of the Hurricane Center, stated, "The winds are not as strong as they were, however, they've expanded. So, you can't confuse that with weakening -- it's not. You still have a lot of power here, you still have a lot of winds." Over 120 shelters in Florida have been packed with people whom were evacuated. Over the last couple days, the storm reached along the coasts of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, urged over 300 people to leave. The Governors of South Carolina and Georgia, ordered over 1 million people to evacuate. Henry Grimball, a resident in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, had a plan to ride out the storm. He said, "These houses have been here since 1770. They've been through a lot."

Questions:

1. What do you think we could do as a community to help the people affected by this?

I would create a fundraiser or a GoFundMe page to help raise money to rebuild the towns and cities that have been destroyed by the hurricane.

2. If you could imagine what these people have gone through, how would you describe your feeling?

I would be very upset and angry because of everything that I lost from the hurricane.

  • Great job Rebekah!

  • The most we can do is offer as much support as we can so that we can help these people rebuild what they have lost. If I was in this position It would depend on where I was at the time and if I was in the middle of the storm id more than likely be scared out of my mind.

    • I agree with you. It's important that we help as much as we can to get the people who were effected back on their feet. It would be great if we could all travel to the damaged areas and help clean along with the rebuilding process. I also agree with how you would feel. It does depend on were you're located but at the same time, it would terrify me.

  • I think we could start a fundraiser to get money to use of rebuilding house and getting people clothing and foods to get back on their feet. They have probably been through a lot because they are losing all of their belongings right now. I would be devasted to lost of my stuff and have nothing.

    • I agree with you. It would help so many people out and help them to begin another life. I also agree with how you would feel. It would be shocking and devistating how everything I had was gone. I wouldn't really know how to think either.

  • I think that anyone around the world can create like you said a fundraiser so that they can be helped out economically in any way. It could also help them by getting any resources they need for any buildings or food supplies. I would feel very upset if my home got destroyed by the hurricane, but also if I lost someone I knew or a family member in the hurricane ti would also be very sad.

    • I agree with you 100%. Not only would they need clothing, rebuilt buildings and homes, but they'll also need food to help them get along. It would be great if everyone is the world helped out with a fundraiser or created their own to help out. I also agree with how you'd feel. If I found out that I lost a family member or someone I knew, I'd be a mess.

  • I would create many fundraisers for the people that got hit by the hurricane and that everything that got raised would go to the family that lost someone or that got there home destroyed

I would be upset because you not only lost your home but you could of lost friends and family

    • I agree with what you said about how using the money from the fundraisers could be used more towards the people who lost anything and everything. I would also be upset if I lost a family member or friend and if I lost my home.

  • I think that as a community, a group or an organization could start a project, and then everyone could participate or donate to that project, and then someone from which ever group created the project could donate the money to disaster relief or something similar. I can't even imagine what the survivors have gone through, but, like you, I would be very upset and angry because of everything that had been lost.
