Stella Blaylock stated that "the shutdown makes [her] nervous," after finding out that her father was furloughed for a week and is now working without pay. Stella's mother was also laid off from her job causing her family to have no source of income. Causing a family trip to have a possibilty of not being a reality. A 20 year-old sophomore wasn't able to submit paperwork for a grant that will pat her tuition and housing causing her to start up a Go fund me page which made around 1/500 of her goal. Gustavo Carlo, an expert on child and adolescent development has studied the effects of financial strain on families, states that "the shutdown is like an acute recession," later on adding that "it's not good for these kids, it's not good for these families." When Stella's neighborhood found out that her family had no source of income children from their neighborhood came up with different ways to raise money for Stella and her family.

Do you think the goverment shutdown is affecting families worse than this?

I think that the government shutdown has indefinitely affected and is affecting families worse than this, because I have friends from GA that have had to sell their homes in order to continue to live properly (they are doing fine now for anyone who is wondering).

What do you think will happen to families just like this if the government shutdown continues for another month or 2?

I think that families just like this will either have to go live with their parents/grandparents and or find another job that can pay them enough to live without fear of going bankrupt.

  • Good summary but you didn't reply to anyone which is worth 20 points.

  • I think the shutdown has affected people just as worse, especially those that aren't getting any income and had been previously living paycheck to paycheck and/or are in a lot of debt. I think that families may have to start looking for part time jobs and definitely cut back as much as they can on spending if they hadn't already or in extreme cases, have to liquidate their assets.

  • I think the government shutdown is doing much more harm than that but even that is completely terrible. I think that many families would go homeless and even start doing illegal things to get through.

  • I think the government shutdown is making it so that people can't afford to pay their bills. If government workers like this continue to go without a paycheck, they will likely have to quit their jobs and find something else to be able to support their families.

  • The shutdown is probably affecting some people and families in worse ways. Some families have both parents working for the government, which means no money coming in at all. More families might have to sell their houses and belongings just to get money and probably move in with other family for the time being.

  • 1. Yes because some aren't getting paid and they might not have been prepared for this shut down. They might ahve spent a lot of their money without realizing there might be a shut down.

    2. I think they will be in really bad conditions unless they get another job for the time being.

  • 1. Since the government has been shutdown people haven't been paid. Well I wonder why. Families in the United States have been laid off because of the shutdown from Trump.

    2.  I think if it keeps going on for months now more families with lose their money, house, their car possibably. It's not right that this is happening to families that dont need this and need the money to help their family.
