The History Of Vaping-Related Illnesses

Recently there has been a lot of discussion about vaping and e-cigarettes floating around. After 8+ mysterious deaths caused by some form of vaping, it is clear that something needs to be done about the deaths, especially when a few were teens. Originally e-cigarettes were made to be a ‘safe alternative’ to smoking actual cigarettes, so many adults looked to them as a new choice, and sadly, so did teens. In September of 2018, the FDA told the vaping manufacturing industry that it was an ‘epidemic’ and advised all manufacturers to stop selling flavored devices that would be addicting to young adults and teens. In March 2019 the FDA banned most flavored products from being sold at any place. The bans were in result of data that shows 153 and counting reports of seizures and fainting have come from vaping- related things. Starting on August 23rd and continuing to today, there have been around 8 deaths caused by some sort of vaping. Although at first many people thought the common factor in the deaths was the product called the JUUL, recent research is showing that many deaths most likely are caused by a THC product, or as people call them, dab pens. Even if the deaths were caused by a vaping device infused with mariujiana, it is now made clear that any form of nicotine vapor is most definitely not good for anyone’s body.

1. Do you think that the FDA and government is doing enough to stepin and help the vaping epidemic?

Personally I think that as soon as they even had suspicion last year of any illness caused by vaping products, they immediately should have started research to make sure their products were safe to be put into bodies. (Which obviously, they weren't. )

2. E-cigarettes originally became popular because adults addicted to nicotine cigarettes would make the swtich to something that is 'less' harmful. Now that it is becoming clear that they are just as, and if not more dangerous, if you were an adult what would you do? Would you still make the switch, as they say?

I think if I was addicted to other forms of nicotine that aren't vaping, I would look to another form than e-cigs. If there was even ONE illness caused by vaping, I would definitely be weary of the product, and would turn to another product like nicotine gum or patches to help me.

  • Great topic choice and well done Jenny!!

  • Clearly the FDA and government aren't taking the proper measures to ensure the safety of these young adults and teens. After one hospitalization they should have launched an investigation and started putting out more bans. If I were an adult in this situation I would try to quit smoking, but if I had to choose between smoking cigarettes or vapes, I would choose cigarettes even though both of them would be highly detrimental to my health.

    • I agree that they should have taken the hint right away that vaping could be dangerous. I agree that although cigarettes cause long term illnesses, I wouldn't want to be hospitalized right away.

  • If I was an adult and was addicted I think I would make the switch because ciggarettes and other nicotine products have caused lots of deaths and vaping advertises a safer way to get nocotine.

    • Yes, I agree that vaping is being advertised as being a safe alternative to smoking cigs, but you can tell which is more dangerous by people are dying a lot more everyday caused by cigarettes and not vaping. So, even if there are illnesses related to vaping, smoking is still a lot more dangerous.

  • 1. Honestly no, lets say they even tried to move the age up to 21+, teenagers will still find ways to get vapes, I would personally just try and stop because both things are killing people

    • I agree that although they keep moving the age up, people and kids will always find a way to get something, just like what happens with alchohol. I agree that they should just stop selling them completely.

  • Since people are dying more and more from vaping, then yeah I would think the FDA should do something more about it. If I were an adult in this situation then I would yes switch but if I had the chioce to not do it then I wouldn't do it in the first place.

    • I agree that I would most definitely try not to begin nicotine addictions in the first place, but if I did it would be in moderation and not heavily depending on cigarettes or vaping or anything of the sort.

  • I do not think the FDA is doing enough to step in because a lot of teenagers vape these days and its a serious matter. So the sooner the FDA steps in the sooner teens will realize and quite.
