The History of Fast Food

Fast food revolutionized the restaurant industry. It is a fundamental part of American culture. The first fast food restaurant, White Castle, was founded in 1921; however, fast food wouldn't take off until about the 50's and 60's. Americans started driving more and had more opportunities to eat at restaurants. People were fascinated by the fact that everyone gets the same food at remarkable speeds. McDonald's wasn't the first fast food chain, but it was the first to implement the assembly-line system. Now, McDonalds is the largest fast food chain in the world, and has revolutionized the world of food.

According to the National Restaurant Association, American sales of fast food totaled $163.5 billion as of 2005. Obviously, there is a huge market for fast food, and companies continue to expand to fill the demand. Although fast food is a huge part of American culture, it is not loved by everyone. Fast food is often associated with selling unhealthy food and overall unsanitary workplaces. Many restaurants all over the world have been attacked in protest of their unsanitary ways.

A Gallup servey showed that 80 percent of Americans eat at a fast food restaurant at least once a month. This goes to show the size of the fast food industry. It is one of the fastest growing industries and will not stop growing any time soon. It really started to take off in the 50's, and has amassed a global market size of $868.11 billion.

  • Good topic choice and well done overall Ian! I do think that your summary could have been longer as it is hard to do the history of fast food justice in a couple of short paragraphs.

  • The only times I eat fast food is when I am driving somewhere over a meal hour or I am not in town to eat at my house. Most of the fast food restaurants are very unhealthy and have lots of grease on their food. My favorite fast food restaurant is probably Culvers or McDonalds even though they both serve very greasy and unhealthy food. When you don't have time to go to a sit down place with healthy opitons your only options are to eat unhealthy fast food.

  • I eat fast food rarely. I think that when I am rushing, or out of town for sports or trips it is easier. I understand it is bad for me and sometimes makes me feel gross. I personally have several favorites. I try to avoid super greasy fast food places like McDonals and I try for something better like Culvers.

    • I agree that fast food is really helpful when you are in a rush, and that it is unhealthy.

  • I eat at fast food restaurants at least twice a week because of sports. When I am not in sports I don't eat it as much. I know they can be unhealthy but that's all there is to eat at after games. I don't really have a favorite because I like a lot of them.

  • I try to avoid fast food restaurants but sometimes it's hard not to go to one when you're in a rush and don't have a lot of time to eat somewhere else. It's unhealthy which is the reason why I try to avoid it. My favorite fast food chain is Raising Canes.

    • I also try to avoid fast food as much as I can, but it can be difficult. Raising Canes is also my favorite fast food restaurant.

  • I think that fast food restaurants are ok but they can not be healthy. But when people are in a hurry and have to get back to work before lunch is over cooking at home is not an option. But with a longer lunch break they can go home and eat with the family. Some people just need to get back to work because they don’t have a 30 - 45  minute break. They have to get fast food or bring food to work. I not eat a fast food restaurant much.

    • I agree that fast food is unhealthy, but it can help when you are in a hurry and need to get back to work.

  • I work at a fast-food restaurant so sometimes but not very often

I would have to say Panda Express
