The Government Shutdown

President Trump agreed on Friday to reopen the government for three weeks while negotiations continue over how to secure the nation’s border. Trump started backing down after a month long government shutdown failed to make Democrats give President Trump billions of dollars for his long-promised wall.   The president’s backing down made a way for the House and the Senate to both pass an emergency spending bill by voice vote. President Trump signed it on Friday night, restoring normal operations at a series of federal agencies until February 15 and opening the way to start paying the 800,000 federal workers who have been furloughed or forced to work without pay for 35 days.  The plan includes none of the money for the wall that Donald Trump had demanded and was basically the same approach that he rejected at the end of December. Two people who talk to Trump daily said that over the past week or so the President had been in a very unpleasant mood because of the government shutdown, that only worsened as Friday approached and he realized that he was losing the fight.

1.  What is your opinion on the Government shutdown?

I think that it was kind of selfish of Donald Trump to shutdown the Government, because it was basically a fight between two political parties.

2.  What do you think Donald Trump will do after the 3 weeks?

I think he will either do another shutdown, or initiate a national emergency.

  • Good story and summary! Be sure to reply to more students on three different days. You commented 8 times on one day instead of around 18 times on three different days.

  • I think that the government should not have shut down and it proves that Donald Trump is a little selfish and will do anything to get the wall even if that means people are getting paid. We will eaither do another shut down, but hopefully by then they have all came to an agreement.

  • I think that it was neccesary to shut the government down if he wanted to get the wall passed because it put pressure on the democratic party. A problem with that was it also put pressure on the republican party as well for creating hardship for the families that were relying on the goverment for money. I think he will shut down the goverment again after 3 weeks and claim a national emergency is at our border.

  • I think that the shut down was unnecessary. It cost many people a lot of money and during the time period, nothing was figured out. If this isnt figured out, I think that he will declare a national emergency and get the funding for his wall. If he doesn't declare a national emergency then the government will shut down again until he gets his way.

    • I agree that the government will shutdown again if an agreement is not made. I do think that the government shutdown was neccesarry due to the fact that it put pressure on the democratic party. With that said, I also understand the hardship that the goverment workers were being put through at the cost of the shutdown.

  • I do think that the shut down was kind of dumb and many people had lost a lot of money in this, but we can't blame it all on Trump he had to go through a lot more than just saying that the government was shutting down, he wasn't the only one for this idea. I am not sure what will happen in 3 weeks but I sure hope the government doesn't shut down again.

    • I do not agree that people lost a lot of money during the shutdown. Yes there pay may have been delayed as a result but they will recieve backpay for their labor and get what they are owed. I also hope the goverment does not shut down again but if an agreement is not made I think we should prepare for one.

  • I think it was pointless. Nothing happened during it. What exactly was Trump trying to gain during this? I didn't notice any difference while it was shut down, and to 800,000 workers go without pay for over a month... it isn't fair to them. Now that it's finally over, I'm not sure what will happen next. This wall has caused a lot of issues and it's starting to sound like more trouble than it is worth. He should reconsider it. There has to be another way.

    • I believe Trump was trying to come to an agreement for funding for a border wall during the course of this shutdown. He also offered a compromise to the left during this time insuring the dreamers a 3 year period of safe haven in the United States. I also understand the struggle for those goverment workers during this time and thats a shame but something has to be done one way or another.

  • I Think that it was stupid and it was just so trump could get money for the wall

I think that trump will declar a national emergency/ shutdown
