The Future of Women in Rwanda

After nearly twenty-five years since the genocide, Rwanda is known as one of Africa's fastest growing economies. This is due to the women of Rwanda. In just one hundred days of the genocide, eight hundred throusand people were killed. There were three hundred thousand to four hundred thousand people that survived. Most of the survivers were women. Today in Rwanda, women take up sixty-four percent of the country's legislature. That is the largest percent in the world. After the genocide, many of the women felt alone, but eventually the started becoming close with the neighbors. They have started to build the country from the ground up. The US non-profit Humanity Unified teamed up with Aspire Rwanda to teach female farmers not just how to grow, but they also showed them how to sell their crops and grow a business. Dr. Gerardine Mukeshimana holds a seat in Parliament, overseeing the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources said that "The farming women in Rwanda is the hardest working person."

Would you be able to not only cope with a genocide, but regroup stronger than ever like the women of Rwanda have?

For me, coping with the genocide would be hard enough. Some of my friends and family would have probably been killed. That would be a very hard thing to not only cope with, but then turn around and make the country better.

Do you think that other country's will start to change like the Rwanda legislature?

I definitely believe that we will see more women is bigger roles within different countries. I believe that one day the US will have a female president. I don't see it happening really soon, but it will happen eventually.

  • Well done Alex!

  •  1 - I would like to think that yes, I would be able to cope with the genocide and still be able to carry out a normal life after some time, but realistically, I'm not sure. It is amazing that these women were able to cope, regroup, and become such an amazing country.

  • 2 - I would like to think that more and more countries would be able to make that change and give women the positions they deserve. More women in governments, in my opinion, is a great idea. It would bring new ideas and views into countries that are mostly run by men. I also believe that eventually there will be a women president and I hope that it's sooner rather then later.

    • I agree, having women in these roles would bring new ideas to the table. These new ideas could be really beneficial to the country. I also agree that it is amazing that these women were able to turn their country around.

  • Coping with something like this would be really hard because some of the people that I'm closest to might have died. I think that women will begin to have more power in some countries but in some of the others they will stay the same because they don't get the same education as others around the world.

    • I like how you said that this may not happen in some countries because they don't get the same education as most of the men. They are most likely known as being unfit for most governmental jobs.

  • Personally, I don't think genocide would be at all easy to bounce back from for those that survived. For the women survivors of Rwanda, its unimaginable to how hard it was to loos friends and family. For the US to step in and help reflect on how our country cares about the rest of the world.

    • I agree with everything that you say. I especially like how you said that our country helping helpind Rwanda makes the US look better and more caring than most people think.

  • Yes because we are stronger now than they were back in the day. I don't think it would be likely because poeple don't like change case in point Trump is the president and all of the parties are mad and some of the people of the US because he is not a polition.. change

    • I agree with you that women are stronger today and are more willing to run for better things and equality. That is most likely the reason why the number of women in governmental positions are going up.
