The Olympic games were religious festivals to honor the Greek god Zeus held every four years. The first Olympiad was held in Athens, Greece 1896. King George held a crowd of 60,000 spectators and fourteen nations participated in this event from Europe and America. However, only men were to participate in these events. Originally, the competition was limited to foot races, but later changed to more games such as boxing, horse and chariot racing and military competitions. The track and field events were held at the Panathenaic Stadium which was originally built in 330 B.C. The first olympiad was also where the first 25 mile marathon was run by a Greek soldier. Obviously, the Olympic games are still around to this day and are held every four years. There are some similarities between the olympic games from then to now, but there have been drastic changes throughout the years as it progresses.
I think that it is very important to know the background history of the Olympic games. It’s interesting how it ties in with Greek mythology. Some people believe in the myths of greek mythology and some do not. I believe that they did start the olympics to honor their God Zeus. I think today we hold the Olympics because it is tradition, but back then they had it for a legitimate reason. Mainly for religious purposes. Also, I think it is very interesting to learn about how different the games have changed since then. There are much more games to participate in now then there was when it first started.
1. Do you believe in Greek Mythology and it's myths?
2. Why do you think only men could participate in the Olympic games back then?
3. Would you have participiated in the first Olypmic games?

Good topic choice and well done Kaitlin. I do think you could have expanded a bit more on your summary and I encourage students to get three paragraphs.
I think that the greek mythology is very interestning and if I was to be religious I would probably belivie in one of the more polytheistic ones. I think that only men participated for sexist reasons like women being weaker back in that time period a man would be the top of the household. I would not have participated in the first ones I would be hanging out with all the brilliant people like plato.
I agree with you. I also think that greek mythology is very interesting to learn about. I also think it is more on the religious side in believing those types of myths and I think its just what you want to chose to believe in.
I don't necessarily believe in Greek Mythology, but I do think that it is an important part of history. There was a lot of misogyny, especially the further back you go in history. They probably didn't think that women were physically able to participate in the games. I don't think I would've participated in the Olympic games.
I do not believe in Greek Mythology, but I think some of it is interesting to learn about. I do believe that only men could participate because they were seen as "superior" and probably seen as more competitive. I would not like to participate in the first olympic games because it would most likely be dangerous.
I definitely wouldn't have been in the first Olympic Games. I am a relatively in active person, meaning I'm not in any shape for a athletic competition, let alone a world class one.
I do not believe in Greek mythology. The stories, much like most other religions, have no base in any sort of fact. I believe only men could participate because they played much larger roles in society back then.
I agree with you! I also do not believe in a lot of the greek mythology myths. I think it is mostly their religion and that they don't really have evidence to support their myths that the greeks told. I also think men only played because they were the main gender back then.
No I do not belive in Greek Mythology, but I do find it interesting. I think back then men were the ones pictured as gods and they were the only ones who would be able to compete. Definitely not. When I think of the first Olymppic games I think of agressive killing a brutal fights. I would not like to participate in that.
I believe in some Greek Mythology and some of the myths but not all of them. I think that only men could participate because back then men were superior over women so it was thought that only men should be allowed to play. I wouldn't have participated because I am not athletic like them. I would probably like to watch the olympics just to see how it it.
