The Dead Sea Is Drying Out

Currently, the Dead Sea in Israel and Jordan is shrinking at a rate of 3.3 feet per year. Many people believe the mineral extraction industries have something to with this. The industries extract minerals from the lake and use them for cosmetic and other consumer purposes. Also, the climate is very dry and hot which makes it hard for the lake to replenish itself. Last year, Israel and Jordan came up with a plan. They both signed a $900 million dollar deal to help keep the waters at a steady level. This includes building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. This canal would pump water from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea. The canal will take up to 3 years to build.

Do you think this is a good idea? Why/Why not?

If there was a lake drying up and it was up to you, what would you have come up with?

  • Good topic choice! Be sure to comment more!!

  • I think it is a good idea because they could still have a chance to keep it there which could benefit them. I would of thought of ideas to help stop this problem and try a couple things out until I found a good one a stick with it.

  • This idea seems like it will help but it also worries me. Mankind interfering with nature is what got the Dead Sea to the point it is at now and mankind should probably stop interfering just in case we could further the damage done. Personally, I would put forth ideas about natural conservation efforts to be made as soon as possible.

    • I agree, you kind of need to think about the consequences of the canal too. It's pretty expensive and if it doesn't work, it would be a huge waste of money.

  • It might be a good idea. I don't really know how that would affect the Dead seas natural environment and balance. I think it's good that the countries are trying to do something about this. It depends where the lake would be. It's all in the original environment and how to preserve that.

  • Ehhh I don't know. I guess if they know what they're doing and they can get everything lined up, then yeah I guess so for it. I don't know a whole lot about marine stuff and Ph levels and stuff like that, but I guess if they know about it then yeah.

  • Yes because they need to help the lake, especially when it can't do it itself. I would have stopped the mineral extraction industries or at least minimized the amount of minerals that they take.

  • Yes I think it is a very good idea because it is trying to save the Dead Sea. I think I would try to do the same thing.

  • I think this is a good idea. If I had to take care of a lake that was drying up I would look at the benefits and see if its worth saving.

  • I think it would be an amazing idea to build this, we never know on what the weather is going to do. It should be possible to do so, I believe they can find the money somewhere and hopefully we have enough resources to build it.
