The Dawn of a New March

After the inauguration of Donald Trump, the White House website began deleting pages, two of them being energy policy and climate change. During Trump’s campaign he claimed climate change was an elaborate hoax, a war tactic created by China to scare the people of the United States. Inspired by the Women’s March, a Reddit thread was formed, discussing the changes to the White House website and the possibility of a Scientists’ March. Soon, Biology professors, Physics majors, and science enthusiasts began to actualize the start of the plan. Hours after the Reddit discussion, a Facebook group, a Twitter handle, and a website were created to connect with others that possessed the same idea. The plan is to have a non-partisan protest, unbiased of any political group, and highlight many problems such as government funding for scientists. The details of the march have yet to be finalized, including its date.

Questions:

  1. What do you think about the marches, are they beneficial or not?

  2. Do you agree with President Trump’s views on global warming? Why or why not?

My Opinions:

I believe these marches are very crucial, allowing us to move a step closer towards world peace. They address problems thousands of people, perhaps even millions, were not aware of at the time. I would have to completely disagree with Donald Trump. He’s trying to erase science, even further, from politics. The scientific evidence is all around us. For example California has been in a drought for more than 5 years, but because of global warming parts of California are now facing intense rainfall, severe flooding, and mudslides.

  • Superb job Janeth! Great topic!

  • I believe that the marches will  be beneficial because whether Trump realizes it or not global warming is effecting us. You can look at the past few winters alone to tell the difference. This year we barley had any snow and it all melted pretty quickly. So as much as he thinks of it as an 'elaborate hoax' it will continue to effect our country.

  • I think they are pointless and they aren't gonna do anything to stop the president. I think that global warming is real but I also think that it is not as serious as some people think it is. I think that it will effect us over time but I don't think it will be a problem in our lifetime.

    • It may not occur in our lifetime, but we need to be worried for the future generations. We can't keep ignoring problems for others to solve, this "procrastination" needs to come to an end.

  • I think that any march has an impact on a topic and I do believe that this march was beneficial to the scientists. I believe in President Trump's views on global warming. I think the whole topic of "global warming" is very dumb... The media says that the ice caps are melting, but in reality, they have been growing over the past 25 years.

  • I think they are a good way to get the word out that the public does not agree with the actions of trump and his staff. I do not, how could climate change be a hoax? it is happening around us everyday. There's even evidence to support it, I don't get how he thinks that.

  • I think that marching is one thing you can do but Mr. Trump is a very stubborn man so I really think the you could do a march to get his attention and maybe get him to sit down with some of the scientists and reason with him.

    • I agree, perhaps if he did take the time to discuss climate change with real scientists, he would finally understand how much of a problem this is.

  • I do not think they will be because most political marches in the U.S. become violent for some reason or another and it will just get worse. But I do not agree with trump because scientists have proved that global warming is going on.

  • I think that these marches are very beneficial when they are done peacefully.  Everyone has their own right to believe in what they wish, and I feel that these marches are a great way to express everyone's beliefs and to meet others who share the same beliefs as you.  However, knowing that President Trump is a "do what I want" kind of guy, I'm not sure how effective these marches will be.  I believe that global warming is an issue and should be addressed.
