Term Limits

The 22nd Amendment states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.” With that being said a president can only be in office for 8 years if they win their two 4 year terms. So since Presidents have term limits should Congress too.

Congress is made up of 100 senators which means that each state has 2. Then there’s the House of Representatives which has 435 members, and the amount of seats each state gets varies from state to state depending on their population. As the years go on the controversy of term limits a-rise. Some people want term limits because they don’t like what their Senators or House of Representatives is doing. Or they may just want someone new in Congress.

Senators currently have a 6 year term period. Where they are a senator for 6 years then if they want to be one again they will have to re-run. Then the house of representatives has a 2 year term period where every 2 years they have to run again. Some people think that it is not fair that they can run for as many terms as they want. Where presidents can only run for 2 terms, so now what do you think?

Do you think they should have a term limit, why or why not?

If they were to have a term limit how long do you think it should be and why?

  • I think that a term limit for them could be good if you consider that it could let new people get more involved in the government. This could help bring new ideas. On the other hand there might be some representatives that people like and they know how it all works since they've been there for a long time, and it could be productive.

  • Presidents can only serve for two years, in my opinion, even if they ran more than twice and kept winning, there would be no real change. Senators and representatives, on the other hand, should be allowed to run as many times as they choose because their votes can vary depending on the president.

  • I think presidents should only run for 2 terms because if they ran more than twice and kept on winning there would be no changing happening that is significant. Senators and represenatives though should be able to run as much as they want because depending on the president they might vote on different things.

  • I think there should be some term limits, but terms in general should be longer. Term limits are important to maintain an influx of thoughts and ideas in our government, but if terms are too short, there is not enough time to pass important legislature. I think that terms should last around 8 years or so, but only 3 terms should be allowed.

    • I like the idea of only 3 terms being allowed.

  • I'm not too sure on where I stand, but I think that if a person is repeatedly being re elected by the people or voters, the people should be able to keep that person in power if they so choose. If voters like the candidate then they like the candidate.

  • I personally don't think that term limits are necessary but I would like the length of the term for the house of representatives to be longer than 2 years because it seems like they do stuff for one year then they have to complain the next so no much gets done.

    • I agree how the house representative should get a longer-term since it hard for them to accomplish things in 2 years.

  • Personally, I do not think that is necessary, if a person who is qualified gets the position, and does his job well, I do not know why it should be done. The same would have to change if they continued with the same ideas year after year, but otherwise there should be no problem.

  • I don't think there should be term limits but there should be reruns so that we don't elect one person and they never leave office. The reason presidents have term limits is because we did not want a dictator. I think there should be re-runs so that we don't have a bad person stuck in office and having reruns will force them to do good work or they will be kicked out.
