Term Limits

The 22nd Amendment states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.” With that being said a president can only be in office for 8 years if they win their two 4 year terms. So since Presidents have term limits should Congress too.

Congress is made up of 100 senators which means that each state has 2. Then there’s the House of Representatives which has 435 members, and the amount of seats each state gets varies from state to state depending on their population. As the years go on the controversy of term limits a-rise. Some people want term limits because they don’t like what their Senators or House of Representatives is doing. Or they may just want someone new in Congress.

Senators currently have a 6 year term period. Where they are a senator for 6 years then if they want to be one again they will have to re-run. Then the house of representatives has a 2 year term period where every 2 years they have to run again. Some people think that it is not fair that they can run for as many terms as they want. Where presidents can only run for 2 terms, so now what do you think?

Do you think they should have a term limit, why or why not?

If they were to have a term limit how long do you think it should be and why?

  • I definitely think there should be term limits so that new people and fresh ideas can be brought in instead the same old person who's been in office for 30 years making decisions. It's not smart to not have term limits and restrictions.

    • I agree with how you think that it's not smart to not have term limits.

  • I dont think that there should be a term limit because if the candidate is that good to be elected again I feel like we should let them get elected because thats obviously what the country wants anyways. Having a new brain and ideas in the office COULD be good but it could also be bad. So sticking with the same person who helped/benefited the country would be the best choice. So i dont think there should be a term limit.

  • I don’t think people should have term limits however I do think that they should have to re-run after a few years. If the people that are in the Senate or House of Representatives are doing a good job there is no reason for someone who knows nothing about the topic to take their place. Unless somebody is doing a bad job, I think that they should be able to stay on for as long as they want.

  • I don't think that they should have a term limit and heres why. The president has limits because it is good to have a fresh brain and new ideas in the oval office, and having a limit on terms gives a chance to satisfy the people that don't particularly like that president. If the congress were to have a term limit, I think that it should be longer than the presidents because there are many congressmen which can all contribute their own ideas.

  • Yes, I think that there should be term limits. If there were term limits, this would prevent the issue of having very old people in power who are out of touch with the modern world. It would get newer people in office with fresh ideas and policies. I think that the term limit should be no longer than ten years.

    • I agree because then there will be fresh ideas and policies.

  • I think there should be term limits. If you have the people keep running years after years you'll never see a change or new ideas. I think the president's term limit is just fine but we need one for a governor and other political leaders.

    • I agree with how you said if we don't get in new leaders we won't get new ideas.

  • I think that it would be a good idea to keep the term limits because the same people would be running for years and years. I do think that different positions should have different term limits. Like a president should not be able to run as long as a governer does.
