Less than 3 percent of teens get the proper eight to nine hours of sleep. To fix this lack of sleep problem several teens use sleeping aids to help them get closer to the recomended eight to nine hours of sleep. Acording to The C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health 28 percent of people between the age of 13-18 seek medication to help them sleep. About half of these teens that say they use medication to sleep have never talked to a doctor about their problem. Many doctors agree that taking medicine to sleep is a considerbly risky thing to do. If you do not get enough sleep you have to decide which risk you would like to take. Even though sleep medication can be dangerous so can not getting enough sleep. Teens who lose sleep are at a much higher risk of health issues than those who get the proper amount of sleep. Also people who don't get enough sleep become more likley to participate in risky behavior like drugs or alcohol use. On top of this teens who do not get proper sleep are more likley to commit suicide. Proper sleep is a huge part of health both physically and mentally.
Do you think that taking sleep medication is worth the risk that doctors say there is? Why or why not?
I think sleep medication is not worth the risk. There is so many reason for why teens do not get enough sleep, so we need to try and fix the sleep problem from the root, not just take medicine to cope with the problem.
Is the amount of sleep you get important to you? Why or why not?
Sleep is pretty important to me. And now after reading this article I see all the health problems that can come with not getting enough sleep.

Well done!
I don't think it is worth the risk, sure sleep is important, but there are other ways to get the sleep you need. Yes, sleep is very important to me, without it, I get headaches, can't think, and have a short temper.
I agree if it were me I would not take the risk that sleep medications have. I also believe that there are other ways to try and get more sleep. Just like you I do not feel good when I don't get the proper sleep.
I don't think that taking a sleep medication is worse the risk. You should get to bed and get sleep. But some people acutally cant sleep so I would understand why they're using a sleeping medication. With pain or trauma so they can't sleep. Yeah it is important to me because if I don't get enough sleep usually the next day I'm crabby and am overtired.
I agree and see why some people might have to use sleep medication, but to me I just can't see myself using them. I also get super crabby when I don't get proper sleep. I also do not do as well in school when I don't get enough sleep.
I think it is worth the risk. Its easier then having to be diagnosed and spening money on the doctors. Plus it gets the job done. I dont think its important to me because i havent got an 8-9 hour sleep in ages and i feel fine and as healthy as i can be.
What about the risk that comes with the medication? I can't believe you can perform at a high level with getting so little sleep. To me I need to get sleep just so I am in a good mood.
No, I don't think sleep medication is worth the risk. Yes, a good night's sleep is so valuable and is much needed, but taking sleep medication to get a good night's sleep is really risking considering the fact that it can be dangerous. yes, amount of sleep is important to me. How much sleep I get the night before can really alter the way my day will go.
I don't think sleep medication is worth it. If so many teens aren't getting enough sleep maybe we should try to find the root of the problem and not just cover it up with medications. Yes, the amount of sleep you get is vital. You can literally die from lack of sleep because your body doesn't know how to function.
Yes it is very important to get enough sleep during the night. Without enough sleep your brain doesn't work at it's full potential. If you get enough sleep then you work better during the day and your brain is firing on all cyliders.
