Teenager tortured in Seattle

Story: http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/28/justice/washington-torture-case/index.html?hpt=hp_inthenews

A couple in Seattle have held the husband's 13-year-old brother captive in their cellar, torturing in completely inhumane ways. Some of them include forcing him to live in a dog kennel naked for 2-3 days at a time without food and water, duct-taping him to a chair and beating him with a bat and a metal bar, and putting his hand in a vice grip and driving a nail through his hand. After escaping, by gnawing through the duct-tape that was holding his hands together, he had to live on the street for two weeks. After the police found him, his captors were put in prison with $500,000 bail.

How do you guys feel about this? Is this punishment harsh enough for the captors? Why or why not?

  • Good job on both posts Alan!

  • They should not have been given bail. They were torturing that kid and they get bail? I personally think that some years in prison and a little (a lot) higher bail might be better. No one deserves to be treated like that and have their abusers be let go without a good punishment.

  • I think that that is terribly wrong. Though, just being set on a bail? They should be punished more than that.

  • This is terrible! I couldn't imagine living through this. It would be... vile. I think the man and woman should go to jail and not have a chance to get out with bail. What they did was revolting. Torturing your own brother? The people with brothers would enjoy to beat on each other sometimes but not like this. I wouldn't beat my brother. The poor kid. I hope he will be okay. He is scarred for life now.

  • I think the people that beat this poor kid, should get treated just like it and have to suffer like that, and they should be in jail forever, not get to get bailed out.

  • Awhile ago someone had a topic about the death penalty. I think this would be a good use of it. This people are sick and honestly deserved to be tortured like they did to the kid, but we can't do that. We don't need this sick minded people on our earth.

    • I honestly think that the death penalty is too forgiving here. If it was up to me, they would suffer the same way the teenager did. But our system doesn't work like that; the closest thing to it is a life sentence without bail.

  • This is awful! What they did to this boy was terrible, I don't understand how someone could have the guts to treat someone as horribly has they treated him! I definitely do not think that their punishment was harsh enough because what they did was completely unacceptable and inhumane.

  • I feel that the Gunns should be sentenced to at least 25 years in jail. Probably not, but they need to learn not to do this again. If anyone close to you did this, then what would you do? I'd actually turn them in for it and would want them to learn their lesson.

  • They should be put through the same kind of torture as the teenager was, but we all know our system can't do that to people. They will most likely be in jail for a very long time though.
