Teens Sleeping in Could Save the USA $9 Billion a Year

Teens need 8-10 hours of sleep each night, and most of us are not getting that. A study done by the National Sleep Foundation, shows that teens have a hard time falling asleep before 11pm, meaning that if you need to be at school by 8am you're most likely not getting enough sleep.

A study by the Washington Post shows that if schools started no later than 8:30am our country, could save an estimated $9 billion each year. They calculated that later start times would result in less car accidents, less money spent on school buses, and better academic performance. Since most school districts start highschool students earlier than elementary aged students. Ditching the system we've been using, of getting everyone at the school the same time, whether they start actual classes in 5 or 30 minutes could save us tons of money. If we had staggered bus schedules we could save money on drivers and buses. That is around $150 per student saved! And that's just one of the many ways the U.S could save the same amount of money as the annual revenue of Major League Baseball

Do you think schools should start later? Why or why not?
Do you think sleeping in would actually improve academic and sport & music performance?

  • Great topic choice and well done overall! Be sure to include your thoughts into your summary and also be sure to comment three different days. All of your comments were on September 7th.

  • I think schools should start later. Schools expect us to be able too focus in the morning when we are still asleep, and when we cant it affects our grades.

I think sleeping in would help with performance. This is because we would be able to 'recharge' ourselves and gain our energy back, giving us more to used during the day.

  • Yes! Sleep is needed and I know that personally, when I have more sleep, I do more in class.

I don't think kids would go to bed early enough to make themselves improve, to many kids would see that they have a later start time and then go to bed later

    • I agree with you Liz. You have a very good point when you state that kids just won't go to bed earlier!

  • Honestly, I would like school to start later, but it's the teens fault if they are not getting enough sleep or not because they are usually on electronics until then. Some students go to sleep at 11pm because that's how much homework they have because of sports but I think if you balance everything out and put phones away while doing homework you would still be able to get enough sleep. I totally agree that sleeping more would improve academic and sport and music performance because your body has been fully rested and your brain is able to be used more efficiently.

    • I'm glad you agree that school should start later, but it's been prove time and time again that teens are in a way hardwired, to not go to sleep early. Electronics does play a large role in that. It is so ingrained into our age now that you can't really blame the electronics anymore.

    • I definitly agree with you about the conflicts of after school activities. Starting at 8:30-9am would make typical sport practices go to 5:45-6:30pm instead. It might end up being the same, get home later, go to bed even later than before. It would be like a cycle in my opinion.

    • I agree with you on number one for sure, it seems like if we start later than we'll just go to bed later and end up getting the same amount of sleep and stress as if the school day was 'normal', like it is now.

  • I think that should consider on starting late but should be up to the school board. I think that for some people it could make a difference but then people will just shift their schedule and staying up later and making no difference

  • Well yes because sleeping in longer is nice and you could do homework in the morning. Yes because kids would try harder and be more engerized and ready to do things
