Taylor Swift's Experience with an Eating Disorder

On Taylor’s new netflix documentary, she shares her past instances dealing with her body image issues and eating struggles. She tells about how the constant pictures taken by the paparazzi sometimes took a hit on her mental health and caused her to restrict her food intake. Taylor describes what triggered her to go into these starving spells by saying that whenever she saw, “a picture of me where I feel like I looked like my tummy was too big, or... someone said that I looked pregnant,” she would feel such a strong self-hatred that it would cause her to stop eating. She goes into how she’s had an unhealthy relationship with food over the course of the last few years, and she still feels uncomfortable talking about it. One specific instance that Taylor cited was a time when she was eighteen, and a magazine made a headline about how she looked pregnant. This made Taylor feel as if she was doing something wrong by eating food. This circumstance is just one of the many examples of when Taylor felt bad about her physical appearance because of certain pictures and articles about her. Despite her reluctance to share her struggles with her body image, Taylor feels that it’s necessary for her to share it and spread awareness.

Have you ever felt bad about yourself because of what you see in the media?

Sometimes, after viewing pictures in magazines or online, I have felt bad about myself because I do not fit into society’s idea of perfect. What’s shown in the media is so much different than real life, and that can cause negative thoughts and feelings of not being good enough. The media's influence can cause a lot of problems and cause people to feel bad about themselves.

Do you think that the media places unnecessarily high standards onto celebrities for their bodies to be considered perfect? What are the effects of this?

I think that the media puts way too much pressure on celebrities to live a perfect life and always be flawless. This can really take a toll on their emotional and mental health, causing them to feel even worse about their bodies. The effects of this can be quite severe, and can lead to things like eating disorders and self hatred.

What could be done to help people not feel so pressured to have perfect lives?

If the media would stop portraying only one type of lifestyle to be perfect, then people would hopefully realize that they don’t have to live that sort of life just to be happy. People will always want to fit in and be considered perfect, so if the standards for such perfect lives are lowered, then people will become happy with the life they’re living. This will lower the amount of pressure placed on both celebrities and regular civilians.

  • Super job Ellie!! Great summary and topic choice!

  • Defenitly yes and I think it is a huge problem because whole world is watching TV and is on social media and that is why it is dangereouse because we just fill our head with someone's problems although we have big issues in our life. Also kids watch it and when they grow up they can try to be like this stars and og course they are not the best examples.

  • Yes, the society we live in now is so judgmental and it's ridiculous. There shouldn't be groups based on who's "popular" or not. Everyone should just feel equal. But that will never happen. Girls these days always have to be perfect so that guys will like them. Girls shouldn't feel that way. They should be happy the way they are.

  • The media places unnecessarily high standards on many celebrities these days. The media expects celebrities to have their version of the perfect body. They are also very harsh on them because they need headlines. The media wants to get people interested in their article and will say anything, no matter how hurtful it is to a celebrity, in order to get more people to purchase their magazine. This causes celebrities like Taylor Swift to feel poorly about their bodies and develop bad eating habits.

    • I agree that the media needs to back off of celebrities and let them live their life more. They shouldn't have to put on this perfect mask every day to be admired. They should be able to be their authentic selves all the time and not feel bad about it. It's true that the media doesn't ever consider the celebrity's feeling, they're just in it for the money and attention. They are willing to hurt celebrities in order to just get what they want, and that's a major problem.

  • I think that its not ok to body shame someone. If they put in work to make there body look good and you shame them for it, it can make them feel terrible about themselvles. When people have to starve themselves to look better, you know that they are looking at themsleves badly.

    • I agree that we should definitely stop body shaming and stop promoting it. Each person has a different body composition, and I think that we should respect and treat everyone with kindness no matter what they look like. It's rude to judge people by their appearance, but it seems like a lot of people do it these days. It's definitely a problem when people are making such drastic choices such as starving themselves. Something clearly needs to be fixed.

  • I have never felt bad about myself becasue of what I see on the media because I know that everyone is different and no one is perfect. I think the media has very high standards for celebrities. I think this pushes them to change their bodies because what other people say and its not really their choice. If people stopped judging everyone.

    • It's always important to recognize that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and we are all different. I agree that the media pushes unnecessary changed onto celebrities to make them seem "perfect", and this can spread a bad message to the public. I wish that people would stop judging one another and realize that we all can be ourselves and still be perfect because there are so many different types of perfect.

  • I have felt uncomfortable in my body but most everyone has, I know God gave me my body to love. I feel so lucky because many people have abnormalities or disabilities and other people make them feel like they are weird. Celebrities push for a non-realistic expectation of self image. Many, MANY people rely on altering, or photoshopping their pictures to make himself look skinnier or tanner or lighter, in person, or in un-edited photos they don't look the same. People become jealous of others, so they push their bodies to change.
