In Indiana, a superintendent decided to resign after she was accused of pretending a sick student was her son so he could get the boy treatment. Casey Smitherman noticed that the 15 year old student was missing from school on January 9, so she went to check on him at his house where she decided that he needed to see a doctor because of his sore throat. She took him to an emergency clinic to try to get him help but they wouldn't because he was a minor and she wasn't his legal guardian. She went to another clinic and checked him in using her son's name, insurance, and then recieved a prescription for medications. Later, the students guardians contacted police after finding out. The student had tore the label off the medicine bottle before he knew it was wrong. Smitherman told police that she had bought clothes for the student and helped clean his house.

1. Do you think that the teacher was in the wrong or was she just trying to help out the student and the family?

She didn't have the right to go to this students house and take him to the doctor without the parents permission.

2. Do you think that the teacher should get a punishment?

I think that the teacher should get fired but not face any legal charges.

  • Good story choice and good summary but you didn't reply to anyone which is worth 20 points.

  • I mean she dident really do anything wrong she just was just trying to help out my taking the poor kid to the doctor and even help cleaning his house but she did tecknally kidnap him so I mean

maby like a few years in prisons for kind of kidnapping a child cuase that is what happend cuase the parent dident know where there son was

  • She should not have gone to the house.  She can be concernced but the parents should have taken him to the doctor.  I think she should have called the parents and if the parents did not do anything and she still had concerns then she should have reported the situation to DHS.  I think she should be warned but not punished.  She did try to do a good thing.

  • I don't think she had this right to take the kid to the doctor. Espically without speaking to her parents. But she definetly was just trying to look out for her and try to make sure she's oklay and get the help needed. I think she should just be gone for awhile maybe she didn't do that wrong.

  • I don't think she was in the wrong. I think she just wanted to help, but she should not have gone to the studants house. The teacher shoud get fired or be on probation. If my teacher came to see me while I was sick, I would think that it is kind of weird.

  • Although she does not have the right to take him to the hospital and claim to be his parent, I think she was just trying to be a good person and help him out. I personally do not think the teacher should be punished at all because she was just helping a sick boy get some treatment.

  • I think that the teacher should not have done that, becasue she is not that kids mother and if she thought he needed to go to the doctor she could have just told his parents to take him, plus she used her own kids insurance to get him in. I think that the teacher should get a punishment becasue she used insurance fraud and in a way almost ubducted the kid because his parents didn't give her permision to take there child and get him a medication.

  • I think that the Superintendent is way out of line here she had no right to go to a minors house without the parents knowledge and buy the boy clothes and take him out of the house which could be considered a kidnapping. I think the Superintendent should face legal charges on the grounds of abduction.

  • I fell  that the teacher should get punished because even through she cares about the student she shouldn't have left work to try to help him; i fell she should've talk to the parents about the child to see if he was feeling better, I think the teachers pushiment should be fair and reasonable

  • I think that the teacher overstepped. She should have consulted the parents about their child's health and let them handle it. Although her intentions were good, she should've left it alone. I think that punishment is reasonable for the teacher's actions.
