Student Feedback Requested--Extra Credit

Hi students.

Much of what I do as a teacher is based on student feedback over the years. It has been several years since I last asked for feedback so now is the time once again to do so. Please answer the following questions to get five points extra credit. Please be honest with your answers as I won't hold anything against you as I need both postivie and constuctive feedback to make myself better as a teacher.

Also, please go to Rate My Teacher and rate me there as well. It does require you to sign up which is free and easy with Google sign in.

If you would prefer to stay anonymous, copy and paste the questions below into an email or Google Doc and share them with me.

1. How would you say I do in regards to allowing student choice and opportunites for students to find success in my classroom?

2. One of the biggest goals of mine as a teacher is fairness. Do you feel I am a fair teacher?

3. Another goal of mine is trying to have a postive classroom environment. Do you feel that my classroom is a postive environment? Explain.

4. Do you feel like you learn in my classroom? What could I do differently to help you learn better?

5. Would you say I lecture too much? Would you like to see more project based learning?

6. Please give me feedback on the forum posts and forum post leader grades. Do you like them? Do you dislike them? Why? If you usually don't do them, why don't you do them?

7. Do you feel that the citizenship grade I started this semester is something that I should continue in the future? Please explain why or why not.

8. What is your favorite thing about this class and least favorite thing about this class.

9. Do you like how I rotate the type of tests I give? Explain.

10. Please add anything else you would like to that would help make me a better teacher and my classroom a better environment.

  • 1) There are many ways to find success since you offer many different choices that appeal to most people.

    2) I think you are mostly a fair teacher. The only unfair thing would be group tests. Most of the time it is 1/2 people that answer while the others don't, but all get a good grade.

    3) I think it is a positive environment. You are a positive person and avoid negative situations.

    4) I don't think I learn in the classroom. Staying focused on a lecture day after day is so hard and trying to retain information when you only go over it once is hard. I usually learn when I study on my own before the tests. I think there needs to be more student involvement or individual assignments after a lecture so we can understand it better, and figure out what we know and what we don't before test day.

    5) I think you lecture a lot. I think there could be more variety in your teaching. I don't think there should be more projects. Once again, we would have to retain the information from sitting and listening to other students.

    6) I like the forum posts. They are very easy points to get. I do them because they don't take long. The people that don't do them are most likely just lazy.

    7) I like the citizenship grade. If people are always off task and have bad behavior, that reflects on their grade which I think pushes them to be better during class. I think you should keep it. It's not hard to get those points and can be beneficial to people who are well behaved during class.

    8) Favorite thing - many extra credit opportunities. My least favorite thing - lectures day after day.

    9) I don't mind the tests or how you rotate them, just as long as I know beforehand what kind of test it will be.

    10) More student involvement, and I don't just mean projects. I feel there needs to be a bigger variety of teaching styles in the classroom since it's hard for a lot of people to learn or stay involved when we just have to sit and listen to you or other students talk, while also being expected to retain and remember the information.

    • Thanks Isabelle!Good feedback.

  • 1. I think that you give us students many options whether it is different ways of doing forum posts or different presentation styles.

    2. I think you are fair and I feel you don't have favorites.

    3. I do think your classroom is very positive because you never give off the vibes of it being negative.

    4. I do learn in your classroom and I like the way you lecture rather than have everything be project-based I like how we don't learn with a book in front of us.

    5. I do not think you lecture too much because I am not a fan of projects.

    6. I don't mind doing forum posts at all because it is an easy way to get points, especially the forum post comments.

    7. I personally do not need the citizenship grade at all since I never got off task, but I do like having it since it's just extra points in the grade book to help buffer if I do badly on a test.

    8. My favorite thing about the class is how the test we have rotates and I really like the group test. My least favorite thing is the open-ended test because I seem to not do as well on them.

    9. I love how you rotate the test. I like the group test the most and I like how we have to get into group-round by answering individual questions.

    • Thanks Dana!

  • 1. How would you say I do in regards to allowing student choice and opportunites for students to find success in my classroom? I think by allowing alternative options for certain stuff you are helping others feel more comfortable which allows them to be able to succeed.

    2. One of the biggest goals of mine as a teacher is fairness. Do you feel I am a fair teacher? Yes, however, I think group tests should be more evened out by other test scores. I feel as if sometimes 1 person carries a whole group.

    3. Another goal of mine is trying to have a postive classroom environment. Do you feel that my classroom is a postive environment? Explain. Yes, you are hardly ever negative and are very upbeat. You also allow chances to make stuff up and do retakes which makes kids feel more positive.

    4. Do you feel like you learn in my classroom? What could I do differently to help you learn better? I feel like I learn. More typed-out explanations on the PowerPoint could be helpful to some others though.

    5. Would you say I lecture too much? Would you like to see more project-based learning? I prefer lecture-based learning instead of project-based. I feel I can learn from a teacher better than I can learn from other student's.

    6. Please give me feedback on the forum posts and forum post leader grades. Do you like them? Do you dislike them? Why? If you usually don't do them, why don't you do them? I personally like forum posts because it starts discussions over stuff that would normally not be talked about. However, I find trying to find a topic for the leader to be difficult sometimes.

    7. Do you feel that the citizenship grade I started this semester is something that I should continue in the future? Please explain why or why not. I think it benefits some kids and makes some behave more. Even if we didn't have it I would still behave, so it's just free points for me.

    8. What is your favorite thing about this class and least favorite thing about this class. My favorite thing is the freedom in doing projects, my least favorite thing is having to be the forum-post leader because I don't like to start conversations.

    9. Do you like how I rotate the type of tests I give? Explain. Yes, I think it gives everyone a chance to be successful during tests because everyone is good at different types of tests.  However, I think the group tests can be unfair in some ways and can be frustrating. I personally like the solo tests.

    • Thanks Adrian!

  • 1. Yes. Simply by allowing your students to choose alternative projects, you let us succeed in diffeent ways.

    2. I believe you are a very fair teacher. Exept for some group test groups. Certain groups feel like they're carried by 1 or 2 people.

    3. I believe you keep your classroom very posative. You're cheery most of the time, and the music before class is nice.

    4. I do feel like I learn a lot in your classroom. It's just that when I'm gone, I usualy forget about your podcast. I think It would be nice if you advertised it a little more than you currently do.

    5. I don't think you lecture too much. You keep things light and you do get us involved sometimes.

    6. I'm a fan of forum post grades. If I did them right, It would be another nice routine. I would like them to be graded more often. I feel a sense of urgency would make student do them more often.

    7. I really like the citizenship grade. I think it rewards us for being good and punished others for being bad.

    8. I think that my favorite part about your class was the group tests where you circle people up and ask us questions like a game show. My least favorite part of your class is how forum posts are graded. I really think that They should be graded more often, but I do understand that it's a ton of work for you.

    9. I really like how you rotate you test. This most recent cycle however, there was a short answer, group, short answer, and next is a group. I would have really liked one of your class quizzes where you split the class into 2 sides. I would have also like one of the group tests where you  treat it like a large gameshow.

    10. I really appreciate how you run your classroom in a way that is improved over time. The way you keep things going just seems to work. I really appreciate that you give your students so many chances for extra credit. You have made my highschool experience so much better just by being my teacher. I really like that you let us dictate our own seating chart (at least until it eventualy turns south). You are a very respectful person and in turn a very respectable person in my eyes. You are honestly one of my favorite teachers and I really hope to have you again later in my highschool career.

    • Thanks Daniel!

  • 1. I think that you give us the most opportunities and choices out of any classroom  I find it easy for anyone to have success as long as they show respect and pay attention.

    2. You are very Fair as a teacher, I wish more teachers were as fair as you are. Sometimes different children get "Special Treatment" depending on the extra circulars they are in, but it doesn't matter to you, That's really nice.

    3. I always feel that our classroom is positive. We may be talking about topics that other may not want to. But you keep it formal, and you also keep it fun and happy.

    4. I definitely learn in your classroom, I like the lectures, and I think that it prepares us for the real world. I wish that we were allowed to take it every year. I don't think that you could do anything differently. You keep the classroom in order, but make it fun. What more can I ask for?

5.I don't think you lecture too much. I mean, on some topics that others may find boring, it may go on for a little bit. But then you ask us for our opinions and it helps us get back into the zone.  I think the projects that we have right now are fine. If you get too projecty then the level of quality will go down. Then that isn't good for students or you.

    6. I like the forum posts, I find them to be easy money. You just write down your opinion and you get how many points. When you are a leader, it depends on how much effort you put into it. I like to reply to everyone, but I know others who don't.

    7. I think you should keep doing the Citizenship grade. It helps those who may not be doing as well pass. For Example. If someone is at a 79 and they truly try their hardest. Then it helps them. I think it helps kids who normally act out also.

    8. My favorite thing, I'm not sure, I like it a lot, but you can always blurt out in class, You are allowed to give an opinion. At least, is having to remember all of the country names, which can be kinda hard.

    9. Yes? I mean, the quarter tests are fun, and the map tests are ok. But when you have the same thing, it can kinda get monotonous.

    10. Thank you for being a good teacher. Thank you for letting us give an opinion also. Most don't and then they wonder why there is some kids failing. If we have a question, you answer it. You don't exclude anyone or give them special "powers" which is really nice. I like that we are able to switch seats. Thank you for being a role model, and for showing what it is like to have a good teacher. You don't yell which is nice, but you also show respect. You are a one-of-a-kind teacher, ( in a good way, sometimes people take that badly). It is nice to be able to know, where the countries are, and what to expect from there. I can not thank you enough. Thank you, and I hope that you have a nice day.
