Last week on Friday, 17 year old Jace Colucci found a drawing of a black stick-figure with a noose around its neck with his name connected to the drawing with an arrow. He found this disturbing drawing in the locker room of a rival school that he went to in order to play a basketball game. Jace also recalled that the previous year when he played basketball in the same rival school there was a video taken and posted on Snapchat of students from the school chanting “Hang Jace.” Jace Colucci and his mother made the decision to take legal action and hire an attorney. The superintendent of the school that the incident took place at, Wyoming County, stated, “Wyoming County Schools takes all accounts of bullying or harassment, of any kind, very seriously.” The superintendent also said that the incident will be investigated thoroughly and that action will be taken. The mother of Jace Colucci said that she believs otherwise. She thinks that the school system does not take racist incidents like this as seriously as they should. As of now there has been no students punished for the occurence.
Could you see something similar to this happening in your own school and why?
I would like to believe that nothing like this would happen in this school district because I think that most students here realize that making fun of others for their race is not okay. However, there will always be the exception of some people.
What punishment do you think the students responsible for this situation should recieve?
I believe that if the students were the same inolved in the snapchat video, they should get in school suspension for a few days at the least, becuase that would mean they made racial insults more than once to another student.
Why do you think occurrences like this still happen?
I think that things like this still happen today because the country is so divided. Also I think that people are very uneducated about eachother and that leads to people saying insulting things that they don't understand the full extent of. For example, many people use the n-word and use the excuse that is is just a word, when yes, it is just a word, but it is also a word with a long discriminatory history. I just think that we should be more educated about the history of different types of people so that we understand eachother more.

Interesting topic and super job Theresa!
I would not believe it if someone told me that things to this extent are going on in our area, those kids should get into trouble with the police and the school because they are threatening the life of someone else. I also agree with what you said, " the county is so divided and we are uneducated about each other".
I also would be surprised if I was told that something like this event happened at our school, but I think that I could believe it. I agree that they could get legally punished for their actions for threatening someone elses life.
I would be astonished to hear of something like this happening in this school district. I just feel like the student body is more open to diversity. Some reasons occurences like this still happen are that some judgemental beliefs have been carried throughout the family since before acceptance was a common thought. Or one "cool kid" said a racist comment and the rest followed in suit until an extreme incedint occured, but, too be blunt, it's also probably just out of pure ignorance.
I too would be surprised if something like this ever happened in this school, however that does not cut out the unlikely possibility of something like it happening here. I agree that most of the students here are open to diversity, however there are surely some kids that aren't. I agree that opinions are passed down from parents to kids and that could be a reason. I also agree that ignorance is a factor.

I don't think that this would happen in our school because I think that people are mature enough to not do that. If people would do that, I think that people would see it and get rid of it. I think that they should be suspended and not able to do school activities for awhile. If they can't handle keeping comments like that to themselves, they can't handle school plus activities. I think that things like this still happen but it's happening less often. People are learning that differences are a good thing and they make everyone unique.
I think that their could be the possibility of something like this happening here at our school even though most of the people here are mature about things like this, because there are always select kids that can't be mature enough to accept someone for their race. I agree that at the least they should be suspended and shouldn't be able to participate in shool activities. I also agree that events like this are less common because like you said, "People are learning that differences are a good thing and they make everyone unique."
I do not think anyone in our school district would threaten to kill someone because of their race, but sometimes people's actions show otherwise. I believe the people threatening to hang someone for their race should have the highest charges against them from the courts.
I agree that most people at our school wouldn't make fun of other, or go to the extreme of threatening to kill them for their race. I also believe that threatening to kill somebody for their color isn't okay and that they could be legally punished for their actions.
