Student dies after fight at Delaware High School

A 16-year-old sophomore girl died Thursday after getting into a fight with other girls in a bathroom at Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington, Delaware, authorities said.

The girl was badly injured and life-flighted to a Children's hospital where she passed away.

The fight broke out in the morning when classes started in a bathroom at the school. Causes for the fight are unknown. Two students are being questioned by Wilmington police, no charges have been filed yet. A weapon is not believed to be used.

The name of the victim has not been released, and an autopsy will determine the cause of death. Students at the school were kept in class until 10:15 a.m. and sent home for the day. Classes were to be held on Friday but dismissed early.

"This is not only an unspeakable tragedy for her family, but also for the school, and the entire community," said a statement on the school district website. "We express our prayers and deepest sympathy to her family who need your support and sympathy at this time.

Do you think the school could have taken certain measures to prevent a fight this bad from happening?

Would you think this school was a safe place, and would you want your kids to go there?

I think this fight definitely could have been prevented. If someone died, the fight was probably huge and someone heard it, or should have been suspicious and looked into why the girls weren't in class. I would definitely be scared to put my kids in a school that has this kind of violence, and would question if the school does enough to teach them differently or if the staff is properly trained to deal with it. This is a very sad story.

  • Great job Nicole!

  • I think that the fight could of been prevented or at least stopped before it got to that point. The girl died so obviously it wasn't a quiet fight and they weren't in class so I think they need to be a more strict school. I do not think that school is a safe place and I would not want my kids to go there because I would be concerned for their safety.

  • Hind sight is always 20/20 yeah there could have been precautions, but they didn't know something like this would happen. I think this happens and it doesn't make the school unsafe they just need to be careful.

  • If there was more supervision in the hallways or something, then maybe someone could have heard the fight happening. Also they could've had security cameras, that way they would see who came out of the bathroom. That way they would know who did it.

    • You are right we have security cameras for a reason.. I know they can't be in the bathrooms but they can see who goes in and out during a class.

    • I would not think that this school is a safe place at all. I would not want my kids to go here, because this could happen to them or anyone else.

  • I think it would be hard to prevent a fight that happens in a bathroom and it is normal for people to be late if they go to the bath between classes. I would be kind of nervous to put my kid back into that school after another kid just died. They need to try to make it safer for kids.

    • I think all schools can learn a lesson from this and make schools safer for kids.

  • I think that the school could have prevented it. The fight had to have been heard by someone, Or someone may have even walked in the bathroom and then left. It is hard to say. I would think school is relatively a safe place. I would have to say I come to school everyday feeling safe. I would have to say that I would want my kids to go to school and hopefully they would be safe. But if they weren't I would definitely home school from then on.

  • I don't know if the school could've stopped this from happening unless they are following everyone around all the time.. I probably wouldn't want my kids going here because who ever did this could be possible of doing it again
