Stress that schools give to students

Unlike adults, who can communicate about how stress impacts their lives, children and teens may not recognize or even have the words to describe how they're feeling. Students are experiencing stress at growing rates, with a 2014 American Psychological Association study finding teens in the U.S. are even more stressed than adults.

Because children and teens spend most of the day in classrooms, teachers can play a powerful role in limiting stress. One way to "displace nervous energy," according to mental health professional Stefanie Juliano, is to allow students to use standing desks, sit on exercise balls or even work on the floor. She also suggests creating a quiet, serene corner by adding a beanbag chair, relaxing pictures, and positive sayings.

I believe to decrease stress in students’ teachers could work together as a team to avoid piling on too much homework on the same nights or scheduling tests on the same day. Also, talking about issues bothering students doesn't have to take up a lot of instructional time. Even five minutes of going over concerns, writing them on the board, and addressing them later can help students put them aside. Another way that teachers could reduce stress is music. A study shows that music helps people relax and focus. Classical music is great for the classroom and can serve as a model for students when they study at home. In high school alone the main causes of stress are romantic relationships, social acceptance, earning good grades, preparing for college, and parental pressure.

What do you think about the stress that school gives students?

How do you think we can improve stress in schools or how can teachers improve stress in students?

  • This tiopic has been sone several times before so it is a bit overdone. Your summary is good but be sure to comment back a few more times.

  • I feel that schoold gives a lot of homework. I think that this is the main thing that gives kids stress in school. I think that schools should give out little to no homework and just have work in class to do because most students do not have time to do the homework.

  • I think school can be stressful especially if you aren't good at school and worrying about grades.  Some people worry about grades more.  I think friends can help with stress.  Teachers can make stress better if they teach the class well and the kids understand it better and they won't stress about grades.

  • I feel that school definately gives students a lot of stress but I do not think it is just homework. I feel the mixture between sports, jobs, and homework is what creates stress because you worry about them all. I think teachers could give out less homework out to help.

  • I think school definitely gives students a lot of stress, and I think one of the main reasons is homework, tests, and their grades. I think some teachers should give out less homework since there are students in sports and some have jobs, so they would have almost no time to do their homework and they wouldn't have time to enjoy time with their friends and family.

  • I don't think it gives too much stress but it could also give more stress at time. I don't know how we can improve the system and give less homework maybe but I really do not have a great Idea on how to get less stress. Sometimes its on the person in school who doesn't take the time to not be stressed.

  • I think that stress during school is constantly changing. High-stress times in school are usually caused by lots of homework getting piled on at one time or having many tests on one day. I think that the musical study is interesting and could help to relax a classroom but they probably won't work for everyone.

  • I think that school definitely gives students a lot of stress. If teachers were to work together and talk about when they are having tests and big assignments I think that would help a lot. If too many things are piled onto the same day then a lot of stress comes. Teenagers already have a lot of stress from social media or trying to fit in. I think that not giving homework to students would not give as much stress, because outside of school they wouldn't have to worry about it.

  • I think that school causes a lot of stress. We go to school for 7 hours and expect us to be able to do hours of homework and studying after. I think that schools can reduce stress by limiting the amount of homework students get.

  • I do think schools give a lot of stress trying to keep grades up. Students end up working too hard to get a good GPA. Having too much stress can play a big role in health promblems. I think schools should give less homework to give us more time at home to ourselves.
