Spiders in Your Fuel Tank?

Spiders cause the recall of 42,000 Mazda6 cars?  I personally was in disbelief when I read this article (Spiders in Your Fuel Tank).  I was dumbfounded when I realized it was not a hoax. A spider known as the Yellow Sack Spider has been accused of weaving its web in the vent hose leading to the fuel tank.  This causes excess pressure in the fuel tank causing it to crack, leading the risk of leak and fire.  The spiders have been known to be attracted to the hydrocarbon in the vent hose.  Mazda has a cap on the hose, but the spiders have been able to breech the cap making their way deep into the hose.  Once in the hose the Yellow Sack Spider makes a web which limits the amount of airflow into the fuel.  Unbelievable that a tiny spider can cause so much trouble.  Mazda has found that this can only effect cars made from 2010 to 2012.  Mazda is offering free software updates to the cars this month to assure that fuel tank does not build to much pressure. They also report that no fires or injuries have been reported from this recall.

I could not believe this when I read it and am still left wondering if this was really just a corny cover up for a much bigger problem. although I think they would have came up with a better story if it was a cover up.

What Do you think, was this really a cover up for a bigger problem or have you heard of this kind of problem before?mazda6 spiders.jpg

  • Well done!!

  • I also believe this is a cover up.  A spider wouldn't be able to survive in a fuel tank.  There is no food along with other conditions.  Mazda is probably trying to cover some bigger problem up.

  • saying this like it's a real problem, is like me saying I'm a potato. The pressure emitted from the exhaust pipe would blow the spider, and their web out without a problem. Mazda probably had a bad idea for a filter, and now they don't want to look like idiots, so they gave a stupid story.

  • it is a problem because if you restrict the airflow it can cause pressure and make it crack, like you said. it can also affect the efficiency of the car and its performance as well. combine all of that together and you just might have to replace the engine and that hose because of that spider.

  • I feel like this might be a cover up for a bigger problem. I do agree that the problem is really weird, but if that it really happening then it is a good thing they found out and are fixing it.

  • I think it is a cover up but then again I don't.  I can see both sides of this because it is very possible that spiders get in there but I also think it would be kind of hard for them.

  • Its really amazing how a little thing can do that much damage. I'm glad that no one got hurt because of this. It's really nice of the company to check all the automobiles.

    • the company did a very good job handling the situation which makes me lean more toward that it is not a cover up.

  • I have not heard of anything like this before. However, i do not think it is a cover up. If it were a cover up, they would have come up with a much more logical facade.

    • That is exactly what I think they could have come up with something much better if it was a cover up but maybe this is what the person who thought of the "cover up" thought we would think
