Snapchat User Data Requests

The government has been requesting user information for quite some time now. The app has received a total of 403 requests to access users' account information, to remove content, or to take down content for alleged copyright violations. Starting in July, the company will begin sending full reports every six months. However, Snapchat released its first report today, April 4th, saying that they "figured why wait until we had a full six months of data before publishing our first transparency report." Requests received from November 1st, 2014 to February 28th, 2015 are covered in the report.

1) Do you think that this is a violation of privacy? Why or why not?

2) Why might the government want such information/power to remove content?

I think that it is fine that they are doing this because I personally have nothing to hide, I don't use Snapchat very often, and it may help the government to make the world a safer place. For example, it may help them uncover terrorists or other dangerous people. It may also lead to the arrests of people who have committed crimes.

  • Yes this is violation of privacy because that is personal information. I think they want power to stop terrorists or or things.

  • I think it is a violation of privacy, because private and personal things should stay that way.

  • I think that it is because they don't need to know that much about us. Just because.

  • I think it is wrong that the government wants to be in peoples business because I think it is a violation of their privacy. but i could see how having accesses to this info could help prevent crime and terrorism.

  • I think it is because it isn't the governments business to be in peoples.

  • I really don't like it, it's not really a violation of privacy because we agree by using the app but still..  If they have a kind of warrants I would say that's ok.

  • I'm pretty sure that Snapchat really has no important information about you, so it shouldn't be a big deal. Plus I looked at the article and it seems like most of the requests for data were from law enforcement agencies that had warrants, so they might have been looking for information about somebody. I think they want the power to remove things, if they promote terrorism or something like that.

  • I  don't think its bad it could help at the long way because it could keep people out of trouble or danger.

  • I don't think that they should be able to do that, It's violating our privacy.
