Sleeping With Contact Lenses Could Cause Vision Loss

Chad Groeschen developed an itchy eye while working outside. He at first thought it was allergies, and then thought it was a sinus infection after it got goopy. After going to the eye doctor, he was diagnosed with a bacterial infection that was quickly destroying his cornea. He was only taking the contact lenses out once a week, to clean them. Although they were okay to wear at night, they do increase the risk of infection. 50% of all people with contacts, sleep with them in. It is also bad to shower with them in, using old contact solution, and napping with them in. Groeschen now has a scar and actually killed some of the cells in his cornea.

Do you wear contacts? If so, have you ever done these wrong things?

What do you think about these risks?

  • Good topic and well done!

  • I don't wear contacts but have really bad allergies. I would hate to end  up with a infected eye. The risks sound pretty wild considering you only have two eyes.. don't really want them with an infection or loss of cornea. Though i do wear glasses I think I'll just stick to those.

  • I do wear contacts almost every day and I've heard the 'don't sleep with your contacts in' spiel a hundred times. That being said, there have been times where I've fallen asleep with them in because I completely forgot that I was wearing them at all! I sometimes shower with them in because I don't like to go through the whole process of taking my contacts out and putting them back in only 20 minutes later after I get out of the shower. I think it's important to pay attention to the risks of sleeping with your contacts in or not cleaning them every day, because getting infections in the eye is a really bad deal. I think taking your contacts out every day to clean them is worth it knowing that your more than likely won't go blind from a horrible infection in our eye from bacteria that your contacts collected.

    • I agree with you. In the long run, it isn't worth risking your eye sight. Just take them out and be thankful you have 2 eyes that you can see with!

  • I do wear contacts, but I have never slept in them or used old solutions to clean them and I don't think I would ever do this, especially after reading this.  Treating my contacts right has always been important to me, because the risk of getting an infection is so high!

  • Yes I wear contacts, I have showered with them, slept with them in, and used old contact solution. I will admit that when i wake up from sleeping with them in my eyes are irritated and dry. Considering the risks, I will probably stop sleeping, showering, and using old solution.

    • Yes, I think that that would be a good idea to stop those things!!

  • I do not wear eye contacts but I understand why people do these kind of things. It's hard to always find the time to change out your contacts and put them in fresh solutions, and not only that but contacts are expensive and people want to reuse them as much as they can. I would not sleep in contacts because I would not want to risk the chance of getting a disease of something bad happening to my eyes.

  • No i dont wear contact but if i did i probably would i think that the risk is 50/50

  • I have never worn contacts but I think if you left them in for long periods of time they could slip back behind your eyes and maybe scratch a part of your eye that is important.
