Six Feet Under but Still Texting?

In 2015 Eugenia Kuyda's best friend died suddenly. At that time she decided that she was going to make a robot that would have all the same thoughts and feelings as her best friend did. She could text his number and the robot would text her back with the same thing that they thought her best friend would say. These robots were programmed to have the same since of humor, fear, vocabulary, and many other things. The robot could also tweet out to someone on their birthday, send a snapchat, or post on Facebook. Many people, such as parents and siblings, would use this for closer.

Questions:

1. If you could use this to talk to someone who has passed, would you? Why or why not?

2. Do you think that this would be a good way to get closer? Why or why not?

Answers:

1. If I could use this to talk to anyone then I would. I would love to be able to have one last conversation with my grandpa. I think it would be a good way just to be able to text them and tell them that you love them and you miss them. Many people have lost a loved one and would also be able to talk to them one last time.

2. I think that this would be a good way to get closer, because then if they passed away in a car accident for example the parents could just text their child and they could tell them that they were not in any pain anymore and that they went peacefully.

  • Excellent job! -5 late

  • I would use this to be able to communicate with ones iv'e lost. It would be a good idea for people who are really struggling with the loss. I think it is a good idea to become closer with the person. If you ever have something to say to them you were never able to then you can. Or, if you were never able to say your goodbyes you can do it this way.

  • I would not use something like that. That is so stupid and unnecessary. Those robots are not the people you lost. Your loved ones that have passed away will always be in your heart and they will always be there but why would you try to hold onto something that is NOT them. That's so dumb. This is not a good way to become closer because you would not talk to them, you would talk to a machine, a robot.

  • I think it would be a good idea if you are having a hard time. Some people wouldn't like this because it would bring back feelings for the person that thy lost. I think that it wouldn't help anything because you wouldn't be able to see the person in real life so you wouldn't have the same feelings.

  • Yes i would use this because i would ask that person some questions that i need answered. I feel like it would be a good way to get some closer because im still trying to find closer with my aunt who died 3 years ago.

    • I agree! If there was one more thing you wanted to ask a person after they died this would be a good way to do that.

  • I feel like for some people this could be good but it could also be kind of sad just because it's a constant reminder that they are gone. It could be a good way to get closure for some people if they thought that, that person who passed didn't get enough time.

    • I agree. With this it could cause people to get worse because they are talking to someone who isn't really there.

  • I can see why people would want to do it, but I personally wouldn't do it because you aren't actually talking to them, you are talking to a machine. I think it is better to just accept that they are gone and move on. It's not healthy to try to replace something that it gone especially the dead. As a christian, I believe that the last time isn't the last time. I will see them when I'm called to go.

    • I also agree with you that you will see them again when it is your time. I do think that dealing with death is one of the hardest things to do in life but I think with this invention it could help you in that situation.
