The disease of SCID, known as bubble boy syndrome, is a genetic disorder that affects the immune system, making nearly any infection potentially fatal. Patients with this disease produce a faulty version of an enzyme called adenosine deaminase or ADA. Without this vital enzyme the immune cells in their bodies die. Without the ability to fight of germs most people with the disease are dead around the age of two due to an infection. Abby and Colton, who are brother and sister both had the disease that affects around 1 in every 100,000. But they are both happy and healthy due to the scientific advancements of microbiology! I think it is amazing where we have gotten in the world of medicine and that we can treat diseases that were once hopeless. What do you think?
