Should we test on animals?

Peta.org states that each year more than 100 million animals are killed due to biology lessons, chemical, food, drug, and cosmetic testing. Before they are killed many of them are in restraints for hours, have to inhale toxic fumes, or are even getting holes drilled into their skulls. The majority of animal experiments do not contribute to medical advancment, like many people believe. Also, diseases that are put into these animals almost always have different effects on them then us. According to former National Cancer Institute Director, "We have cured cancer many times in mice for decades, and that just simply didn't work for humans." The same thing happened when 85 HIV/AIDS vaccines have worked for animals, but they haven't for humans. Testing on animals will never be the same as humans, because we are biologically built different.

Universities usually exaggerate findings from their animal experiments and they even stated that, "they often promote research that has uncertain relevance to human health and they do not provide key facts or knowledge important information." Since experimenters hardly ever give out failed animal studies, the public does not know the true effectiveness of testing on animals.

Species most commonly used in animal testing are rats, frogs, rabbits, birds, fish, and mice. Most of the labs who use these animals are not required to give them any pain medication or veterinary care when doing the testing. Out of the 11,000+ facilities that the USDA regulates, only 120 inspectors are watching the operations. Alternatives to animal testing could be testing on human cells and tissue.

Do you think we should test on animals? Why?

If you were an animal would you want to be tested on?

  • I don't think we should test on them because the reason we are doing it is because we don't want to do it to ourslves. If I were an animal I wouldn't want them to do it to me but animals can't talk so they don't have a say in it, also they don't know whats going on.

  • I very much disagree with testing on animals, but we need to test on something and humans are at the top of the food chain and we are above all other animals. If I were an animal I wouldn't want to be tested on but the people and things about me in the food chain would test on me anyway.

  • I get why they are testing on animals, but the animals are a lot different than humans. I don't really know why they aren't doing some test on humans because I bet that some humans would voluenter for the testing. If I was an animal I definetly wouldn't want to be tested on because I could die from it.

  • I believe that we should not test on animals because if it doesn't have the same effect on humans and it doesn't cure anything for us then why would we keep doing it. If I was an animal I would certainly not like to be tested on it sounds like more of torture than anything.

  • I understand why they test on animals, but I didn't know that it didn't even matter. now that I know that information I think tht twsting on animals should be limited because it is unnecessary to treat that animals in that way. more importantly the animals should be trated wiht respect.

  • I think testing on animals is neccesary. I also think we should only test with small animals such as mice and rat that are overpopulated to begin with. If I were an animal would I want to be tested on, If I were an animal I don't think I would be smart enough to know what was going on. If I did I probably wouldn't want to be tested on.

  • Personally I think that it depends on what is being tested. Like if it is something that could save humanity then yes I think it should be allowed, but if its not something important then it shouldn't be allowed. If I was an animal I probably wouldn't want to be tested on, but if it is to save another species then I am all for it.

    • I agree, something as small as makeup or hair products should not be tested on animals. However, like you said if it is going to cure a huge and deadly disease I think that it would probably be more okay then.

  • It is not right to test on animals. I get that they can help with scientific progress, but they aren't even biologicaly alike! What's the point?! In some cases it has really helped us, but why couldn't we have just administered these tests on human cells and tissues? We probably wouldn've had better, more accurate answers as a result. Cosmotology products are tested on animals as well, which is incredibly stupid. We're putting products on an animal to see if they react, when we're not built the same. They might not react and it does some kind damage to the human who puts it on. I just don't understand why this continues when we have other, more efficient ways of testing that doesn't harm millions of animals each year. They don't even understand what's going on, which is the worst part about it.

  • I am against animal testing. We are all creatures of the world, and I don't beleive that animals should be subjected to experimentation just because humans think that they were some how have a god given right to torture animals. It especially sickens me because animals are defenseless.
