Should we test on animals?

Peta.org states that each year more than 100 million animals are killed due to biology lessons, chemical, food, drug, and cosmetic testing. Before they are killed many of them are in restraints for hours, have to inhale toxic fumes, or are even getting holes drilled into their skulls. The majority of animal experiments do not contribute to medical advancment, like many people believe. Also, diseases that are put into these animals almost always have different effects on them then us. According to former National Cancer Institute Director, "We have cured cancer many times in mice for decades, and that just simply didn't work for humans." The same thing happened when 85 HIV/AIDS vaccines have worked for animals, but they haven't for humans. Testing on animals will never be the same as humans, because we are biologically built different.

Universities usually exaggerate findings from their animal experiments and they even stated that, "they often promote research that has uncertain relevance to human health and they do not provide key facts or knowledge important information." Since experimenters hardly ever give out failed animal studies, the public does not know the true effectiveness of testing on animals.

Species most commonly used in animal testing are rats, frogs, rabbits, birds, fish, and mice. Most of the labs who use these animals are not required to give them any pain medication or veterinary care when doing the testing. Out of the 11,000+ facilities that the USDA regulates, only 120 inspectors are watching the operations. Alternatives to animal testing could be testing on human cells and tissue.

Do you think we should test on animals? Why?

If you were an animal would you want to be tested on?

  • I think that we could test certain things on animals but not really life threating things. Also everybody has diffrent health conditions and not every human is the same so it really would not help or be 100 percent effective because diffrent people will have diffrent symptoms.

  • Animals are not test subjects, therefore I do not think it is right to test on animals. I don't think we should be hurting or killing animals for our sake, so if they can safefully and carefully test animals without hurting or killing them, than I think it would be fine. Otherwise, they should find a different way to do testings.

    • I agree, animals should be treated the same way as humans would. I would also agree that they can totally do the testing if it is not harming or killing the animals, or if they are at least giving them some sort of pain medication and veterinary care.

  • I think we should on certian animals depending when or if the animal is got som desease. I would be okay with being tested but I feel like i would be killed in the process. What If the testing goes wrong an the testing killed me as an animal. Its like a vacine that goes wrong.

  • I don't think testing on animals is right, but in some situations it is progressive for science. If there is a way to carefully test on them without hurting them, it should be fine, but I don't agree with hurting or killing animals for our sake. Any living animal, regardless of the size, shape, or age, should be treated as what they are, living animals, not test subjects.

  • I get why they test on them, but since we are built different I don't think we should test on them to help us. If it works with them and not with us we shouldn't use them to test stuff to help us. It would be better to test on human cells and maybe even humans that volunteer. If I were an animal, I wouldn't want to be tested on.

  • I do not think we should be doing test on animals because like you said most test have different effects on them then they do on us. If I were an animal I would not want to be tested on. Its against their will and I think its wrong that they don't even get pain medication or veterinary care.

    • I agree, it is very wrong that they don't get any veterinary care. If I were an animal I also would not want to be tested on, because I don't get to say yes or no. Animals have no way to consent to the testing like humans potentially could.

  • if im going to be honest yes but only on mice not other animals such as rabbits and so on. But I think its a great to find out if a vaccine works becasue they wont just go up to sombody and be like hey would you want to be vaccinated with aids and then well start giving you random vaccines to see if itll be cured. like no so yes i think we should test on animals but only mice. and no if i was an animal id hate to be in that postion.

  • I do not think that we should do nearly as much testing on animals because it is not right. I also think we should do more testing with humans and less on the animals becasue some people would probably be tetsed for research. I understand why we test on animals, but I think we should do it much less.
