Should we test on animals?

Peta.org states that each year more than 100 million animals are killed due to biology lessons, chemical, food, drug, and cosmetic testing. Before they are killed many of them are in restraints for hours, have to inhale toxic fumes, or are even getting holes drilled into their skulls. The majority of animal experiments do not contribute to medical advancment, like many people believe. Also, diseases that are put into these animals almost always have different effects on them then us. According to former National Cancer Institute Director, "We have cured cancer many times in mice for decades, and that just simply didn't work for humans." The same thing happened when 85 HIV/AIDS vaccines have worked for animals, but they haven't for humans. Testing on animals will never be the same as humans, because we are biologically built different.

Universities usually exaggerate findings from their animal experiments and they even stated that, "they often promote research that has uncertain relevance to human health and they do not provide key facts or knowledge important information." Since experimenters hardly ever give out failed animal studies, the public does not know the true effectiveness of testing on animals.

Species most commonly used in animal testing are rats, frogs, rabbits, birds, fish, and mice. Most of the labs who use these animals are not required to give them any pain medication or veterinary care when doing the testing. Out of the 11,000+ facilities that the USDA regulates, only 120 inspectors are watching the operations. Alternatives to animal testing could be testing on human cells and tissue.

Do you think we should test on animals? Why?

If you were an animal would you want to be tested on?

  • Great story choice and summary! Be sure to inlcude your thoughts into your summary next time. Also be sure to reply more frequently as well.

  • I think that for the time being it is right and necessary to continue testing on animals. The potential result of not testing on animals would be to test on humans. We would be less venturous with our experiments, afraid to cause the person discomfort, that we might not discover amazing, medically useful things. In the initial post Kami said that the alternative would be testing on human cell and tissue, I'm curious as to where we're getting the cells and tissue if they're not attatched to an entire person.

  • I think that we need to keep testing on animals other wish what would we test on. Would we just go to human trials which would be a lot worse then killing some bunnies for some safty research.  I think that it shows a reation from a living thing and that it' s not on a human so its fine.

  • Yes, I think we should test on animals even though it is cruel it's better than having humans being the test subjects and getting holes drilled in our skulls. Personaly no I woulnd't want to be tested on I don't think anyone would, animals feel things just like humans. If they were doing the testing on humans poeple would complain that it's cruel there is no comfertable in between.

  • I think we should keep testing on animals because with some of the studies they need something living to test on and I think it is better to test on animals rather than people. I think if there is a good reason for the testing it is fine to do the test on animals.

  • I think using test on animals is not right. I believe that if the animal has a life ending disease then scientist could use test on the animals to possibly save their lives. But other than that, I do not believe test should be ran if it has a chance of harming them. But I do not see any other way we could do the test.

  • I think that we should not test on animals unless they have a rare disease or something. It is very cruel to test on animals that have nothing wrong with them. If I were an animal I would not want to be tested on unless I have a disease or somehting in my body that is very rare. If they test on me for noe reason than that is very wrong.

  • I dont think we should test on animals for human benefit, it should be to help benefit the animals and treat their dieases. If i was an animal i dont think that i would want to be tested on, I definetly dont want to be forced to inhale toxic gases or have holes drilled in my skull

  • I personally feel that it is very inhumane to test on animals, yet our scientific advances wouldn't be what they are today if it wasn't for this. I believe we should find another source to test one, but there is very limited options.

  • I think we should find a more humane way to test things if that is breading them just for that purpose I don't know. if I was an animal I wouldn't want to die but that is true for all living things everything that any living thing does it to survive.
