Well before you decide let me tell you how it started

It was written in August 1892 by the socialist Minister Francis Bellamy it was originally published in the youth's companion on September 8 1892 Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country In its original form it read

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

But it was changed in 1923 to

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

And in 1954  in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."Shortly thereafter, the pledge was begun with the right hand over the heart, and after reciting "to the Flag," the arm was extended toward the Flag, palm-down.

In World War II, the salute too much resembled the Nazi salute, so it was changed to keep the right hand over the heart throughout.

So here is the big question should we say the pledge of allegiance every day or not and explain why?

  • Good topic choice Kenzie! I do think your summary could have been longer. You could have added more on what your title actually asks. I like that you added the history behind it but then you didn't discuss whether it should be said each day in school.

  • I think that we should still stand and recite the pledge of allegiance every day because it shows respect to America and the people who died fighting for our freedom and rights. With that, I do think not everyone takes it very seriously since we do it every day, it isn't that hard to show respect for your country and the people who died for it for not even 30 seconds.

  • I do think that we should stand and recite the pledge of allegance every morning as a sign of respect to those who faught for our countries freedoms. I simply do not understand the people that fight agaisnt it so hard because it literially only takes a few moments.

  • I think that we should stand for the flag and say the pledge of allegiance every day because it shows respect for the country and for the people who fought for it. It is also super simple task that is less than a minute and shows appreciation.

  • On one hand, I think that saying the pledge of allegiance is in respect to our country, and saying it everyday would be renewing of our pride for the USA. However, I find it strange that we teach children at such a young age that you should swear to always be behind your nation no matter what. Saying the pledge sometimes feels contrdictory to what the US stands for, which is freedom.

  • I think that everyone should stand for the flag because it shows respect to not only the country but to our people that fight for our rights. Its not that hard to stand for 30 seconds with your hand over your heart.

  • I don't think it is a bad thing to stand up and say the pledge everyday. However, I can see that some people don't take it as serious now. I think we can take out 30 seconds of the day to reflect on what the flag stands for.

  • I believe saying the pledge is a great thing to do, as it has so much history behind it along with a great meaning. Something as simple as putting your right hand over your heart and saying those words and a huge sign of respect towards all the veterans and fighters that have lost their lives to sacrafice towards our country and making sure we are free.

  • I think that it is a good thing that we say the pledge of allegiance every day to remid us that people fought for their lifes to have the country we have to day. People need to respect our country and the people that fought for their lifes.

  • Its not a huge deal but saying the pledge definitly helps to remind what is stands for and how important it is. It is just like singing the national anthem every game and it just makes you stop and think about how lucky we are to be free and american.
