Should We Keep Unmarked Cops?

Should we keep undercover/unmarked cops? There are many makes and models of police cars. Some police cars don’t identify as cop cars. Some have squad car, response car, public safety car and many more names. Though those ones are marked, and can pull you over, are unmarked police cars really necessary while having all those other ones?

Overall, undercover policing has been a very effective route in policing. Undercover police cars control the movement of traffic. When people know there may be a cop they tend to follow traffic laws better. When no cops are easily seen, they loosen up on the laws. Having unmarked police cars out can worry some people into obeying the laws. Many crimes tend to happen where police cars are not. Having unmarked cars can secure the area better and catch criminals. The use of unmarked cars may seem unfair, but it ensures safety for the public.

Many people do not enjoy being pulled over, especially when it is by someone who they didn’t even know was around. Unmarked cop cars blend into traffic. Unmarked cars are sometimes difficult to identify. If an unmarked car tries to pull you over some would think that it wasn’t a cop because it has no marking. Unmarked cars can lead to people impersonating the police and abduction rates increase. Some people will not end up obeying the police orders if unmarked.

Overall, I personally do not have a problem with unmarked cop cars in a small town. I think in bigger cities it could become a problem with people impersonating them. I think they help control the streets and make towns safer.

Do you think unmarked cop cars should be banned? Why or why not?

Have you ever seen an unmarked police car do anything?

Do you think people would try impersonating police and abduction rates would increase?

  • Personally, I find unmarked cops very annoying because if I come across any car going slow on the highway I don't wanna pass them. I have seen unmarked cops pull people over and I have seen them arresting people. I think that many people would impersonate an unmarked cop car but I don't think that would increase abduction rates.

    • I agree, unmarked cop cars give me a fear of passing on the highway. I take the highway to the school and back every day and anytime I get behind a slow vehicle I get anxious to pass because of unmarked cars.

  • i think that unmarked police car need to be more noticable, so people don't thinkthey can get away with pulling somone over by pretening to be a cop. They can be useful when it comes to speeding. People won't see its a cop and won't slow down until it is to late and then they'll get a ticket.

  • I think that unmarked cop cars need to be known a lot easier as it is very hard to notice them. I have seen an unmarked cop car on the highway and he pulled someone over. I think that if people tried impersonating police that it would not be good for the community as people wouldn't know.

    • I agree that they should be more noticeable to keep people safer. I agree that it wouldn't be good for the community if someone tried to impersonate one.

  • I think unmarked cops do some really good things. They can help catch people who are good at evading police officers, especially dangerous criminals and drug dealers. They can help with strategies and catching people breaking the law as well. But I do see how it could be an issue because someone could lie and impersonate unmarked cops with a fake badge.

    • I agree that they do some really good things and hardly have a negative effect. I think there are more pros than cons to keeping them around. Although someone may try to impersonate one, why would somebody want to?

  • I think unmarked cop cars are a good thing. They help the police at a stratagy stand point for certain things. They are not always used to just pull people over. I have seen a few and I could see an issue in big cities with impersonation.

  • Unmarked cops, in my opinion, can be good depending obviously on most situations. It can help them catch people easier because when anyone sees a cop they know to slow down and so on. We can also get bad drivers off raods.

    • I agree that they can be either good or bad depending on the situation. I find them unnecessary for just routine traffic stops, but I do find them good for like police chases.
