Should We Keep Unmarked Cops?

Should we keep undercover/unmarked cops? There are many makes and models of police cars. Some police cars don’t identify as cop cars. Some have squad car, response car, public safety car and many more names. Though those ones are marked, and can pull you over, are unmarked police cars really necessary while having all those other ones?

Overall, undercover policing has been a very effective route in policing. Undercover police cars control the movement of traffic. When people know there may be a cop they tend to follow traffic laws better. When no cops are easily seen, they loosen up on the laws. Having unmarked police cars out can worry some people into obeying the laws. Many crimes tend to happen where police cars are not. Having unmarked cars can secure the area better and catch criminals. The use of unmarked cars may seem unfair, but it ensures safety for the public.

Many people do not enjoy being pulled over, especially when it is by someone who they didn’t even know was around. Unmarked cop cars blend into traffic. Unmarked cars are sometimes difficult to identify. If an unmarked car tries to pull you over some would think that it wasn’t a cop because it has no marking. Unmarked cars can lead to people impersonating the police and abduction rates increase. Some people will not end up obeying the police orders if unmarked.

Overall, I personally do not have a problem with unmarked cop cars in a small town. I think in bigger cities it could become a problem with people impersonating them. I think they help control the streets and make towns safer.

Do you think unmarked cop cars should be banned? Why or why not?

Have you ever seen an unmarked police car do anything?

Do you think people would try impersonating police and abduction rates would increase?

  • I have seen many people get pulled over by an undercover cop. Mostly because they didnt know it was a cop so they did not slow down. But most of the time when someone sees a marked cop car they slow down and follow the laws for the rest of their drive.

  • I think unmarked cops shouldn't be banned. I think that in some cases it would be needed for the cops to have a vehicle that people don't recognize as cops like this so they could protect people from bad things. I have seen unmarked police cars going to a call.

    • I agree that sometimes they need unmarked cop cars. I wonder if they would be liked more if they were used for just undercover stuff and not for routine traffic stops.

  • I think that unmarked cop cars are good because people should be following the rules on the roads the whole time theyre driving. It might be a problem in a big city with people impersonating the cop cars, but not in a small town. I've never seen an unmarked cop car do anything.

  • I feel that unmarked cop cars are a good way to show people that they need to be following the law at all times. I have seen unmarked cop cars around Harlan than I have in a bigger city. I do agree that in a bigger city they most likely have very few if any unmarked cop cars due to the fact of people trying to impersonate them.

    • I agree that it shows people they need to be following the laws at all times. Some people speed all the time and think their okay and when an unmarked car pulls them over I think they will become more aware.

  • In my opinion there is no need for them to be banned. It is proven that it is really effective, yes there are some issues with that but in when it comes to the end goal i think that it is a good idea.

  • I think that unmarked cops are a good and a bad thing just because they can be undercover for some people that their on the lookout for without those people knowing. I also think there a bad thing because then if there is a unmarked cop and you get caught speeding it sucks because you can most of the time not tell what the unmarked cops look like and how to indentify them.

  • No, I don't think unmarked cops need to be banned.  I have seen an unmarked cop pull someone over before outside of Harlan.  I do agree that impersonating an unmarked cop could be a problem in a big city but not as much of a problem in a small town like Harlan.

  • I think unmarked cars should definitely be limited to certain areas. In my opinion, Harlan is a good place for them because it's small, but in a major city there could be many problems with people impersonating undercover cops. If people are impersonating them I think we'll see an increase in abduction rates.
