Should We Have Year Round School??

As we begin the new school year the question of year-round school seems to pop up a lot. Many people have different thoughts and feelings on year-round school. The year-round school has a lot of pros and cons to it. I personally think we should not have year-round school and should keep it the way it is.

If you think about it, year-round school would be very nice because then over the summer you wouldn’t forget all the stuff you have learned. Then again year-round school would also suck because then you don’t get any super long breaks, and it will feel like you have been in school forever. On the plus side, you would get longer breaks throughout the year though.

In a normal school year every month, you get at least a day off especially if it is an important holiday. Then during Christmas break, we get like one week to two weeks off. We also have Thanksgiving break, Winter break, and Easter break where we get a couple of extra days off of school. Then we have our long summer break. Most schools in the United States have the summer break where they get the whole summer free. Where in other countries they go all year round. When they do go all year round they get a lot of spaced-out breaks. I personally like having the summer break because then I don’t have to worry about school and homework. Plus summer has nice weather, so then I get to enjoy it.

In conclusion, I feel we shouldn’t have year-round school because most kids enjoy their summer by being outside and working. Granite kids probably won’t forget what they’ve learned, but I feel like adjusting to a whole new schedule would be very hard and challenging to do.

Do you think we should have a year-round school? Why or why not?

What do you think is something positive about going to a year-round school?

Would you consider going to a year-round school?

  • Good topic choice and well done overall Dana! One thing you should have inlcuded in educate people on what year round school actually looks like. It comes across that it's school for 12 months which isn't the case.

  • No because school is already long enough and we have to relearn things at the beginning of the year.  We need a break.  I guess if it was year round we wouldn't have to review lasts years things.  No I would not want to go year round.

  • It's a simple fact that people are more productive when they have more breaks. So If we had a normal 2 weeks off every quarter with wendesdays off, I think we'd all be more accepting of a year round school plan. My only concern is the transition from grade to grade. I think that might be a little too rushed.

    • I agree with how switching from grade to grade would be rushed, and I feel it would be a little bit confusing.

  • I think that school shouldn't go year round. For the simple fact that kids need lives besides school. Kids need to focus on other things for a while. Mainly for mental health. And most people have vaction on the time of summer. Makes it easier for families to spend time together.

  • I agree with you that school should stay the way it is, because of all the given reasons, plus having school all year round would be mentally draining more than the nomral amount of school already is. I know we need to perpare students for the future, but having school - all year around would be mentally beating our future. Even though there is options for students to take further school options like summer school who want to puruse school more than the average kids,  the majority of kids still want to live their teenage years, and for younger students, even there childhood. Something positive about having school all year round is like you said, our education would be a lot furthered than it would right now, and would probaly give students a higher level of sucsess in the future. Personally, I would'nt ever even think about attending school year round, because even though I deeply care about my education, I also care about making memories and living a life outside of school.

  • I think that school should stay the way it is because people need a nice long break durring the good months of the year to relax and have fun. I also think that having the school year the way it is now helps familys plan things easier in the summer like vacation because it is a longer break.

    • I agree with you because most kids go on vacation in the summer.

  • No, I personally think that school should stay how it is so then we just have a long break in the summer when the weathers nice. Year-round school would only be nice so that we could have longer more sporadic breaks. No I would not because I think school becomes tiring as it is and we need a break.

    • I agree with you because school does get very tiring and breaks are very nice.
