Should We Have Universal Health Care?

Universal health care has been a topic of discussion over the last couple of years. Universal health care is defined as “ensuring that all people have access to needed health services of sufficient quality to be effective while also ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user the financial hardship," by the World Health Organization. This would mean that no matter how much or how little a person makes they would have health care.

The arguments for universal health care. Some people are pushing for universal healthcare so that way all people have access to quality medical care. This way low-income people are able to get access to medical care. Another reason people are pushing for this is that way chronic conditions can treated on a regular basis.

The arguments against universal health care. There have been a handful of countries that have some version of universal health care. Some of these countries are Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Skeptics say that these countries with universal healthcare are a lot smaller than the United States and have a less diverse population.  People are also against it because more of their paycheck would be taken out in taxes to pay for universal healthcare.

In my opinion, I do not think that the United States should have universal health care. I believe that taxes would increase and that there will be longer wait times to see doctors. Procedures that are not seen as urgent could take months to years to get done.

Do you think the United States have universal healthcare?

What do you think would happen if the United States were to introduce universal healthcare?

  • I do think that the United States should have health care. We have always named ourselves "progressive", yet some people still can't afford to go to the hospital if they have a problem or need something. I do think that it could be a mess at first if the U.S. were to introduce universal healthcare, but I feel that in the end, more people would get the help that they needed and it would be very beneficial.

  • I agree with you and I don't think that the U.S. should have universal health care because while it makes it affordable for everyone, its going to raise taxes on everyone. therefore, it won't save everyone as much money as you think it would. Also, this just seems like bringing the country closer to socialism, which isn't what I would want.

  • I do not think universal health care should be in America. Right now America is in debt and with the government handing out stimulus checks, we are in bad condition to do something like that. After covid, what the government should do is make health care more afordable.

  • I think we should have an altered version of universal healthcare. I do not know enough facts to have a set opinion. However, I have seen and heard of so many people who have gotten so sick and hurt because they can't afford to go to the doctor or get medicine.

  • I believe that universal healthcare would benefit many people, the fact that some people can't pay for the health services destroys lives and families, some children lose their parents because they weren't able to pay, and I feel like it also sends the message that only rich people have the right to be cured in some cases. It might lead to higher taxes and longer wait times so I understand the other point of view.

  • I thikn that it would be good to have universal health care. I don't know what kind of problems it would cause but there would defintely be some.

  • I think that it would be a good thing to have universal health care and I think that the lower class people would be very pleased if the United States did that. I don't know what problems would arise from this but I do feel some would arise and some people would be unhappy.

  • I  don't think that the US should have universal health care. It would however be nice for some people like the lower class citizens of the US and the illegal immigrants as well, but that would cause a lot of free loading and then people would stop doing certain things and just free load. I think that there would be a ton of freeloading if this happened in the US.

  • Personally I don't think that we should have universal health care. It would be nice for the lower income citizens but this day and age free loading off the government is getting to be to popular. What happened to people who got off the couch and worked for there money, now all you have to do is say you have some diesese and they send you a fat check every month. And if the U.S were to introduce it as I said there would be just a bunch off free loaders.

  • I feel like there a many other ways we can get low income people good medical care instead of universal health care. It would raise the tax prives higher and people would be angry for having to pay for them.
