Should there be a Columbus Day? There are a lot of people who know and support Columbus Day, but a lot of people don’t know the truth behind Christopher Columbus. He did many terrible things to the people’s land he invaded and he didn’t explore the land that many think he did.
The first reason he shouldn’t have a holiday is because he did terrible things to the people’s land he invaded when he went to Central America. He found lots of Native Americans in the places that he discovered and basically started a genocide. He would take a lot of the Aztec men and enslave them to look for gold and do other work for him. He also took women that were as young as 10 years old and supplied them to his men. If the Native Americans didn’t obey him he would torture and kill them. He also brought many diseases to the America’s which caused an estimated 90% of their population to die.
The other reason we should not celebrate Columbus Day is because Columbus never even touched any of the upper 48 states, all he sailed to was Central America. He went to islands such as Bahamas, Cuba, and Jamaica. Which makes it odd that we celebrate him in North America. Leif Eriksson was actually the first European to set foot on North American soil about 500 years before Columbus visited the islands. Eriksson was born in Iceland in 970 A.D.
Personally, I think it is very stupid and unnecessary to celebrate Columbus Day is the U.S. because of his acts toward the Native Americans and the fact he never really discovered anything.
Do you think we should celebrate Columbus Day?
Even if Columbus did end up in America, should we still celebrate it after all he did to the Native Americans?

Good topic choice and your summary is pretty well done. I would like to see more of your thoguhts and opinions. I also thik you should have replied more as well.
I agree that Columbus did horribly things to the Native Americans, but I think that Columbus day mainly celebrated the day that North and South America was discovered by the English. It does say Columbus day but I don't think people celebrated that day for how tortured and enslaved innocent women, children, and men.
I do think that Columbus day is a very odd holiday. As you talked about in the article Columbus never even touched the ground of the upper 48 states. You also talked about how Columbus killed tons of Native Americans from diseases and sort of started a genocide.
I agree also that there shouldn't be a specail day that is made out to him if all of them things are true about him escpecially because that is what he was known for and if he didn't explore the land then he shouldn't be recognozed for that because he didn't help with it.
I agree, what he was known for is finding america, which he did as a european, but he never found the United States land. So that just confuses me on why we call it a national holiday. If they wanted to do that down in central america it would make a little bit more sense
i think We can still celebrate america in a different way on the same day. What Columbus did was horrible and we shouldn't be celebrating that and dedicating a whole day to him. after all he did to the native amaericans.
I completely agree with that. I think columbus day isn't really about him, we are just celebrating the discovery of america under his name. So I think the name should be changed so we can still celebrate this day under a name that is not Columbus
I think we should celebrate Columbus day despite what he did to the natives during his arrival. Columbus was essencially the corner stone to exploring new land and if he had not arrived to what he thought was india then exploration of what is now America may not have happened until years later. The discovery of the new land by Columbus built the backbone to the age of exploation of North and South America.
I think we shouldn't celebrate Columbus day because of the reasons that you said. he really didn't discover america and along with that he has commited mass murder and enslaved Indians. Columbus did awful things to Indians, so celebrating this holiday is useless.
There are some reasons we shouldn't celebrate columbus day but many people don't celebrate just Christopher Columbus. Many people look at the holiday as the discovery of america and kind of the beginning of the founding of our country. But I can see how it can be offensive to some people.
