Within a single school year, students take several tests in each classroom. These tests or quizzes are to collect data to see if students are learning and progressing at the rate and way they are supposed to. Sometimes in schools, some teachers allow retakes on all tests or certain tests depending on the weight of the test. The question I am faced with today is should all teachers be forced to allow retakes on every test. Some would say that is positive and would help the grades, but others think that it makes school and tests too easy.

Some people think that if we allow retakes on every test it doesn’t teach students to problem solve, be responsible, and properly prepare. Allowing retakes on all tests weakens a student's motivation to listen in class, study, and prepare. If schools require retakes, you may see the grades fluctuating and changing constantly. Another con of retakes is that it is hard on the teacher. Teachers would have to wait to give other students their results to allow for any retakes. Some students will put off the retakes and prolong them until they are “ready”.

On the other hand, others believe that there are pros to retakes. One of which is that it reduces the anxiety and stress of a student. Sometimes students skip school because they have such a high level of anxiety because of a test. This leads to students failing due to a fear of tests. Allowing retakes would relax a student because if they do poorly they can always try again. In school, there are several instances where a student who studies, does well in school, listens in class, and is overall a good student gets busy, forgets the student, and does very poorly on a test. Allowing retakes would benefit students who try but just had an off day.

I think that retakes aren’t terrible and I enjoy it when teachers allow retakes. I think that most students who care about their grades try on the first test and don’t need a retake. I think that it shouldn’t be required and should solely be up to the teacher. If a teacher feels it is necessary then they can allow it, but if it is an easy test that they know people will do well on, then there is no reason to implant a retake option.

Do you think teachers should allow retakes on all tests?

Do you use retakes when you do poorly?

  • Great topic choice and one that hasn't been done before-+5. Your summary is well done but is there research out there on test retakes? Do they help? Are they worth it? You only replied six times all on the same day so be sure to reply back about three times per page on three different days.

  • I believe the teachers should be allowed whether or not they choose to give out retakes on tests. It could become beneficial to many students . The student would be able to (hopefully) take responsibility and learn from their mistakes.

  • I think it should be up to the teacher to give out retakes. I like the idea of retakes because it gives the student the oppurtunity to improve themselves. However, it would probably be easy for students to memorize the test, or cheat on it.

  • I never knew you can retake test until I came to the US, I like the system behind it, but you basically could take the test, take a sneaky picture and retake it and get an A. I personally never took a retake because I never needed to and I probably would mess it up.

  • I don't think that they should be "required to give retakes. I think that they should allow retakes so students can learn from their mistakes and possibly get a better grade.

  • I don't think that teachers should allow retakes on every test they give out. Although they should still allow students to take retakes on some tests to allow them to learn from what they did wrong the first time and fix their mistake. Teachers should also give out retakes to students who were gone during lesson that were included on the test.

  • I personally think that teachers should not be "required" to give out retakes on all tests. I think that teachers should offer retakes to students that will take what they learned from doing poorly and try to improve on their score. I feel that if it is a gaurentee that students will get a retake they will not try to get a good score to begin with. Also, many students would not change anything from the first time and just wing it again.

  • I think it should be up to the teacher. Would it be nice if you could retake every test that you take? Yes it would but it does not make sence. There is not enough time in the day retake a test that might take you an hour. If it took you an hour and a half the first time you take it then you are missing half of your next class. Then you retake it and you are missing the first half of that class again. This would make it hard for you to understand the directions for your next class since you missed the first half of it.

  • Yes, I believe that it should be required that teachers give retakes on all tests because I believe that it gives the student a chance to improve both their test score and what they learned. If you do not allow a student to retake the test I believe then they just accept it and do not learn from it at all.

  • I think that as students, we must trust the teacher on whether they feel it should have a retake or not. I think a teacher knows whether or not students are going to need it. For the harder tests it could be their choice to allow it, but the easier ones they can take that privalige away.
