Should Shelby County Speedway be shortened?

The new decision to reform the track from a half mile to a third mile has lead to a lot of discussion and disagreement on whether or not it is the size that is hurting the amount of cars and fans that show up or how the track is ran every saturday night, and how the track is promoted. The big debate is about how the track is historic for the amount of years that it has been a half mile and how some people like a big fast half mile. In the past few years large tracks have been dying for a dozen reasons. Lots of people seem to enjoy shorter tracks too it is argued that it is funner to watch and it is said that you won't tear up a car as much if the track aint so big. A big track is fast speed and fast speeds can more damage most of the time, and that is a reason why Shebly County Speedway is going to be shortened so they can get more cars to come and more fans to support the track. It is argued that just because the track is going to be shortened for the big half mile to a small third mile that isn't going to bring in the cars and fans that you want it to all by itself. They need to have a good promoter that will promote and get people to come. Which is 100% true if there isn't someone that is trying every weekend to bring in the cars and fans shortening the track won't help that much. However it don't help that much when the fair board where the race track is located doesn't help that much. Which is a big thing the race tracks all around. Everyone bashes the promoters when they can't do much when the fair board don't do anythng to help.  A good fair board does a lot for the tracks that bring in money and bring in a lot of cars and fans. Harlans fair board just doesn't do enough for the track.

With the decision to shorten the track that might just be the best for them since everything keeps going up in price. Hoosier racing tires at one point were $110 dollars now for the upcoming 2022 race season they are $150 dollars just for one, you need four at one time just to race one night. Not including you might put two new ones on for the ending race of each night. Fuel for race cars isn't cheap either it now cost $14 dollars a gallon. When it might take 10 gallons to get someon through the night. That is a few reasons why the track is being shortened because it will be a lot less hard on tires and fuel for everyone a night. Its argued by some that isn't a big deal, but for some people that is a plus that they won't need as much fuel and they won't need as many tires as they would on a bigger track rather than a short track. Wrecks are also another reason why people are excited about shortening the size of the race track. Lots of people don't like a big fast racetrack not because of the speed neccessairly but of the wrecks that come with a bigger fast race track. When you place cars on a third mile vs. a half mile they are gonna go quite a bit faster on a big track than compared to the smaller tracks and most of the time a faster speed causes for a worse wreck and torn up cars. And with a big wreck it might take someone a few weeks to repair the car from the time it takes and the money it cost to repair it. Another arguement is that with a big fast track someone can be a far ways a way from the rest and not make it a good race on a big track when they get all spread out. Which is not fun from a drivers perspective or the fans especially when they have to watch it. On a shorter track it gives people more of a chance if they start in the back and come to the front they have a better chance of catching the leader. Which gives the fans somehting exciting to watch and that is what will keep them coming back week in and week out.

One of the biggest reasons that was planned for when the made the decision to shorten the track is that it will bring in more cars and fans. Alot of people say that might be the case for the first couple of times and then it will go back to be the way it was before they shortened the track. Which will cause a lot of people to bash the track which is ridiculous because if they want to run the track than they should and see how easy it is and see how they like it when people are always constantly complaining about something. Your not always going to be able to make everyone happy all the of the time. Sometimes change is good and I think that they change that they decided to make is going to be very helpful of the bringing in of more cars and fans. And if it doesn't it doesn't it was worth a shot becase what they have been doing for the past couple of year isn't helping anything and sometimes change is for the good and sometimes it is bad. But either way I don't think that they changing of the size of the track is going to hurt anything if anything its going ot help and if it doens't it was a good try. Some people don't like change and neirther do I sometimes but sometimes it is needed because something might be dying or becoming less popular so you wouldn't keep it the way it was if it was hurting. Also when it comes to the Shelby County Speedway it hasn't had a lot of good income in the previous years and its lucky its still running. Just like any other bussiness if its dying they would either have to close down or make a big change to try to keep it up and going which a lot of people don't understand.I think that a lot of tracks promoters don't get a lot of credit for the good things they do, but when they do bad they get bashed for it which is think is terrible. I think that if it is so easy to run a big facilty like this then why doesn't everyone? Because lots of people can have a lot to say until they get put in a situation like the promoters are in and then they don't like how they are being treated because they are doing their best?

Do you thing the resizing of the track is going to help bring fans, and cars?

What do you think about the shortening of the track?

  • Great job Hayden! You might have written the longest forum post of all time and it is all your thoughts and opinions. It could be cleaned up a bit but great, great effort!!

  • I understand why the track is being shortened although I don't like it, it is for the better of the track. The reason they are shortening it is being bigger tracks are becoming less popular and the track isn't making as much money as they use to. I do think the resizing of the track will bring more fans.

    • I agree with you that the smaller tracks will by far bring in more people overall wether it be more fans to come and watch or more cars to come race. Most of the time in the previous years the stands have had a small amount of people and I think that this will bring in more fans since they like small tracks.

  • I get why they are shorting the track because drivers are starting to like the shorter track beacuse its less harsh on the cars and bodies. But it also causes more catchups and tight races. I just think that this is gonna create more crashes.

    • I disagree with you that it is less hard on the body of the cars because they probaly will be a lot more contact with a shorter track however damage wise it will definitely cause way less damage since the cars aren't going as fast as they would be a big track like the track used to be.

  • I think that as someone who doesn't really know much about racing it really doesn't matter to me. I think that the demand and want for shorter tracks are seemingly getting higher then I understand why the track would be shortened. I really don't mind either way.

    • I agree that a lot of people might not know about it and some people that really don't know about it are the ones that think its dumb and criticize what they're doing even though they don't know much about it also there is a higher demand for shorter tracks that why they are making the track shorter.

  • I personally dont really know that much about racing, but it seems that there are benefits to shortening the track. If shortening the track will bring more fans and have more parking spaces I really dont see anything wrong with it.

    • I agree that it will bring lin more fans because a lot of people are becoming to like the smaller shorter tracks for some reason. That is why the big tracks are dying such as shelby county speedway. If the track can't make the money they have to make a change like theyre doing this year.

  • I personally don't know much about racing, but I think there are benefits to shortening the track, like more parking space available and also a lot more fans in the stands, but I feel like a shorter track could also potentionally lead to more crashes with the smaller track size.
