Should Senators Have Term Limits

Currently, there is no limit to how many terms a senator or representative can be in office for. Over the last few years, there has been a movement to limit the number of terms they can serve for. There are many reasons people want a limit.

One of those reasons is that it would help bring new blood into congress. This would bring in new ideas. It would also make them not fight as much if they want their plan to go through because they have a much more finite amount of time to work with.

Another reason is it could help lower corruption in the government. This would happen because lobbyists wouldn’t be able to “invest” in their campaigns as much because they can only run a few times. Corruption would also be lowered by them not getting attached to their power and it corrupting them.

Do you think there should be term limits on representatives and senators and why?

How many terms do you think the limit should be and why?

  • Good topic choice and good job replying to people Luke! Your summary is brief overall. While you do have three paragraphs, due to their lenght, I considedr them to be more like one paragraph.

  • Yes, I believe there should be term limits for senators and representatives because like you said before we need new senators/representatives to bring new ideas into the congress. These new ideas could help us sort out many problems and issues we may be having. I think the term limit should be 4 years because it is not to long to serve and it is also not to short to serve as well.

    • I totally agree I think four years is a good length it could be a bit longer but no shorter or it would feel like we are always changing it up and nothing gets done because of that.

  • I think that their should be term limits in our Congress. The world is changing rapidly, and what our nation does can effect us both domestically and internationally. I think that with term limits, it would force things to get done. It would also allow the Congress to be mostly fresh for the most part every few years. I think a term for a senator should limited to 4 years. This way, we could schedule our elections so that one year we would have a mostly new Congress, and 2 years later a new President.

  • I think there should be limits for representatives and senators. This would be helpful so they would have to get things done faster. Also so that we have fresh blood. I think there will be fresh ideas and that could really help our government. I think the term should be 6 - 10 years so that they still have a long time but not forever.

    • I agree that it would help with getting stuff done but 6 years is a bit short especially for the senate that would only be one term but for the house, it would be three so I think they might need to change how long each of them are in office for or have a different term limit or them.

  • I think there should be a limit because change is sometimes needed. I think that it would help out if we had some more younger people instead of mostly older people. I think that maybe 10 years is probably a good limit because it should give them time to improve our country.

  • I think that there should be term limits for senators. As you said, it's important for "new blood" and new ideas. I think having new people/politicians every now and then is very important for a steady democracy and having senators with no term limits makes that harder to do.

  • I personally think that senators should have a term and they shouldn't be able to go over that term. If these senators would have a term I think that they should have a four-year term, so they can get in and get what they want to get done then they can leave and we can then get new blood in there.

  • I definitely think that there should be term limits on all elected officials. The legislative branch makes the biggest impact on the American people aside from the judicial branch and yet they are given indefinite power. Currently, you have people such as Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell making important decisions about COVID-19 when none of these decisions affect them considering they have millions of dollars in net worth. I think they should be limited to 4 years with 4 terms.
