Should schools get rid of homework?

Should schools get rid of homework?

This question can and would be answered by many with a basic "yes" due to the simple fact that no one wants to take the time to do it outside of school. However, if you really think about it, homework could be doing more harm than good for students. A Stanford study shows that two or more hours of homework can result in increased levels of anxiety and stress, physical health problems and even an alienation from society.

The students surveyed in these studies lived in California and had average household incomes of 90k. Also, 93% of them went on to college, either a two year or a four year. Lastly they averaged about 3.1 hours of homework each night. Many of the students saw homework as their primary source of stress, and saw it consuming most of their social life. They found themselves having to choose between homework, socializing, or extra-curricular activities.

I can find myself relating to the students from this survey. Whenever I am assigned homework, I know I most likely won't be able to hang out with my friends that day because I will be too buisy worrying about getting my work done. Also homework can be the last thing you want to do after a hard/stressful day, and it can just add to the pile. For example, there have been nights where I stay up way too late only to get my homework done, sacrificing sleep in the process. Sleep is very important not only to keep one energized throughout the day but also to help them focus enough to learn, so you can see how homework might be counter-productive.

What changes do you think should be made in regards to schools assigning homework to students?

I think schools shouldn't be allowed to assign homework over the weekend because the weekend should be time for students to have to themselves and not have to stress or worry about school.

Do you think schools should stop assigning homework altogether?

I don't think schools should stop assigning homework altogether because it can prove to be helpful. As long as not too much of it is assigned, homework can be a good thing.

  • Good topci choice and well written summary! I like that you mentioned a study showing data and not just relying on opinion. Well done! The one issue is thatm while you replied well, all replied were done on the same day instead of three.

  • I think homework should be completely gone. School projects and studying take up so much already, plus an assignment?! It's so consuming. My day goes about the same every single day: School, home, and homework. What kind of lifestyle is that? I know I'm not alone on that either. On the weekends, I try to cram in as many plans as possible because that's basically my social life for the week. The school gets eight hours of my day, five days a week. Why do I need to put even more time into it afterwards just to pass? And half of the time I'm basically dead in school because I stayed up late on homework the night before. I undertsand it's unrealistic for schools not to give homework, but why not only assign simple assignments and expect us to study and have to prepare for projects. I have responsibilities outside of school that are often neglected. I can say that when my homework is done, I feel as though I can finally breathe, and that's not right.

  • I think it would be great to not have any homework but at the same time it wouldn't work and it wouldn't be productive. They shouldn't stop assigning them altogether, they should just give less and not during weekends or holidays, those should just be days where you relax and tave time to do things you can't do when you have school.

    • Ah yes the holidays. having homework indirectly assigned over the holidays is the worst because you know you should work on it but then again you know that you don't necesarilly have to. The holidays should especially be reserved days for no homework and relaxation. Most of the time I can't say that I have homework over the holidays, though.

  • I think they should assign less homework in general. We already do enough work as it is in school. We also have more classes and things to take care of as well. I don't think they should stop assigning it all together however. I think that to keep us engaged, assignments would be beneficial. Just less of them however.

  • I think homework should definitly not be given over weekends, or on weekdays at that. We are at school for 6 hours learning already. Why do we need to be doing more work when we get home after school or 2 hour practice for extra curriculars?

  • I think that schools should stop assigning homework it is a chore to do and it sucks as well because after a long day at school I would just want to go and sit down and chill out on the couch. And enjoy the rest of my time not worrying about school work. I think that they should defiantly assign less to no homework in some classes i mean yes studying but no homework.

  • I think that homework can be helpful sometimes and sets a perspective towards yourself and it's on you to take the time to complete it. I think the teachers are just trying to help us out more in our classes so we are more sucessful when some of us take schoool to the next level towards college. I don't think that teachers should give us homework on certain days like have some assigned days to give us homework, for example, on weekends I don't think that they should be able to give us homework as that's a time for the students to enjoy themselves and get away from school for a few days.

  • I agree with alot of other people when I say that homework has it's good and bad attributes. But all in all I believe we shouldn't have as much homework. I feel like teachers don't consider the fact that we have multiple classes and not everyone can finish everything in class, so we come home with a million assignments due the next day. I personally think that if teachers just take time to ensure students get their work done and actually help them it could be so much easier. That doesn't necessarily mean that there won't be ANY homework, but at least not enough to stay up for hours and go to school sleep deprived the next day. I just feel like school work should be at school and home life shouldn't be involved.

    • I agree. I think that school is where most if not all school work should be done.  And another thing that someone could propose might be that we simply have an extrra class period to get our "homework" done. Sure it would make school longer, but I beleive that our minds are naturally more proactive in a school setting because thats become natural over the years and years of learning and working at school.
