Should Schools Ban Homework?

There have been many attempts of banning homework in countries all around the world. These issues have been discussed for decades. Schools in Quebec have now banned homework for children in grades 1st grade to 6th grade for a year. In Finland there is very little homework assigned and their students have shown some of the highest test scores in the world. Parents are questioning if their children should come home from a 9 hour day of school, with around 2 hours of homework to do. They are also saying too much homework may not be a good thing, especially for younger children. Many of these young children just want to go outside and play in the sun, but they have homework to do.

What are your opinions on homework? Do you think younger children should still continue to have homework, why or why not?

  • Great job Lexie!

  • I believe that banning home work could be good or bad just depending on who you are. Some people learn more from doing the homework than sitting in clase. but banning it would make a lot of students happy.

  • I believe that it can be a good idea, sometimes homework can be more of a bane than a benefit. The having to sit and do homework instead of going outside at that age can affect children athletically, can lead to more stress and lower scores, and can make it harder to finish a large amount of homework if you are assigned a lot.

  • homework not a lot but a little bit. yes because they will learn how to do home.

  • We shouldn't have an overload of it. Younger children have enough time in school, they shouldn't get homework.

    • I also think they shouldn't overload homework, it gets to the point where it's too much sometimes.
  • I think younger kids shouldn't have homework but we should in high school

  • I think an amount of homework should be a part of school, but not as much as some schools get. Younger kids dont need to be doing homework, and even if they do the childrens parents do most of it for them.

  • Homework is a necessity in America because of the "no child left behind" system we have. We try not to let kids fail, or fall behind, which is our initial downfall, there are a lot of people in this world that don't need school, and would be better off if they just went into something they were passionate about. I think that is what the government doesn't understand about school systems. By trying to put someone through the process who doesn't need it, they're setting them up for failure. If we didn't have the "no child left behind" system, homework wouldn't be that big of a deal.

  • I think that their should still be some homework but not as much as they give them now. They have to prepare for high school or it will be a rude awaking for them.
