Should Religion be Taught in Schools?

There has been a big debate for a long time over whether or not it's appropriate to teach religion in public schools. Of course, there are private schools that are based on religion- like Catholic schools- but should religion be pushed onto students that go to public schools?

Religious topics and prayer used to be a part of the school curriculum until June 25th, 1962, when, in the Engel v. Vitale case, the Supreme Court decided against it. People in favor of teaching religion say that children should know the basics so they can judge for themselves what they believe. They also say learning about religion could encourage kids to be accepting of all different types of religions and religious practices. It also could help to challenge misbeliefs and prejudices that some people may think about religion- as long as ALL different types are discussed and not just Christianity.

On the flip side, some say that teaching students about religion would be wrong because while some religions teach positive things like love and acceptance, those same religions are comprised of things that are actually violent. Having both of these things incorporated together, condoning violence but also encouraging peace, could confuse kids and spread the wrong message. Also, a lot of people argue that it isn't right to expose children to beliefs that differ from what their parents teach them or how their parents choose to raise them-- basically arguing that the school system has no right to tell their child what to believe. Children could also become confused as to why their parents believe certain religions, which could disrupt the very basis of the family.

Do you think religion should be taught in school?

Do you think it's the school's place to expose kids to religion?

  • Geat topic choice and well done Scarlett! You had a lot of student comments last night so I won't hold that agianst you for not commenting. -10 posted after class on Monday.

  • I do not think religion should be taught in school because there are a lot of different religions and everyone has their own different opinions. I also don't think that it is the school's place to expose kids to religion because some families might want them to learn one religion and then they are taught a different religion, and that could make the parents unhappy.

  • I personally don't believe that religion should be taught in schools. One reason is that schools purpose is to educate us and prepare us for the real world; not to instill certain beliefs upon us. Religion is a very personal endeavor that should be explored by oneself, where they can try and learn about different things.

  • I don't think that teaching children religion is a very good idea. I think if you were to give them lessons on each one and why they came to be it could be beneficial but still not the best. This is a hard topic because it makes you a more well-rounded person but I don't think that school should teach religion.

  • I believe that religion should not be taught in schools because like what is said theyre is just so many opinons of people that it could lead to dangerous things if the wrong person takes something too wrong and then it becomes a threat potentially against another teacher or student.

  • I think that schools should not be teaching relegion in schools. I think overallt there are too many beliefs to be discussing one in schools. I think that if people want to learn about relegion it should be their choice to go to church and seek it for themselves.

  • I don't think relegion should be taught in school. It is a very controversial topic and everyone has other opinions and some people aren't religious at all. There are different beliefs and thats why Harlan has like 5-8 churches. I think that it should stay out of school and let the kids decide if they are religious or not. There are Catholic schools and if you want your child in that enviroment the you can take them to one of those schools.

  • I do not think religion should be taught in public schools. If a parent wants to have their kid taught a certain religion while being taught school things then they should send them to a private school. For example, in your area a common school that will teach you a religion while school is the Shelby County Catholic School.

  • I don't think religion should be taught in schools, unless you go to specific school of a certain religion that is taught there. But in public schools it shouldn't be taught because there is too many different religions out there and so many different beliefs that some people would get upset with others in their beliefs.

  • I feel that religions should not be taught in schools. America today is very diverse and there are so many different religions and beliefs. I just feel for a school to teath one religion over all the others would be very unfair and just not right. There is also people who don't even believe in religions so making them attend a religion class would be useless.
