GMOs have been a big topic of discussion for a long time. Many misconceptions are associated with genetically modified foods when really, GMOs are helping our economy with increasing crop yields, adding nutritional value to the modified foods, and overall foods GMOs are becoming a marketing scam.

For starters; the economy. GMOs increase the over crop yield, therefore contributing to the economy. In 2019, agriculture, food, and related industries contributed $1.109 trillion to the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). By increasing the yields, farmers are able to make more money and support our economy while keeping the supply consistent with the rising demand.

Second of all, the additional nutritional value. Most people believe that GMOs are unnatural and unsafe. This is not true. In fact, GMOs are lessening the need for pesticides and herbicides. Along with that, the science that goes into GMOs has been in the process of being perfected dating back to ancient Egyptian times, and will continue to advance.

Lastly, the marketing of “GMO free” is impossible and dare i say a marketing scam. Over time, the seeds are genetically altered to produce a higher quality crop. With that label, producers can charge their consumers more with really no difference in production.

With that being said, before forming an opinion on GMOs, and many other things, do research. consider both sides and most importantly, evaluate the facts and evidence.

Do you support GMOs?

What are your thoughts on the matter?

  • Interesting topic choice and well done Corrine!

  • Yes I support GMOs, they are helping farmers grow more food faster letting more people have food and ethanol. GMOs have helped our economy and they are not hurting anything. Like you said there is nothing unsafe or unnatural about GMOs and people need to research before they say they are unsafe.

  • I don't think that GMO's are that big of a deal because literally everything nowadays are genetically modified. The pros definitely outweigh the cons on this matter. Would you rather have more food for a country that really needs it or would you rather have less food and say its all natural when really even if its genetically modirfied its still natural.

  • I am fine with GMOs because they help farmers by helping the increase of crop yield and overall contributing money to the GDP. I agree with the part where barely anything is GMO free anymore because people want better, fresher, and better overall apperance in produce.

  • I think GMO's have lot's of benefits. I don't think it should be required to label GMO's, but they can if they want. GMO's can have more nutrients and make farmers' jobs easier and they get more money. I don't care if GMO's are labeled, but I know some people will, so it may just be better to label it just in case.

  • I support the marketing of GMO. It could possibly prevent world hunger but we have yet to do that. If the GMO's didn't produce a high enough yield then farmers and livestock owners wouldn't be making enough money or not having enough grain to feed their animals.

    • I agree, if we continue to debunk the misconceptions that come with GMOs. If we can do so, we can truly change the world. And as the number of farmers in America decreases, creating a superior gene could make up for that and we could continue to feed the world.

  • I do think there are definetly benefits to GMO's, but legally speaking it should always be labeled. Historic and modern GMO's probably differ a great deal as well. There will always be people who prefer to avoid them and they have that right, as well as the right to know whether something is genetically modified.

    • I agree, however, the chances of finding a genuine non-gmo product or food is very near impossible. There are many ways to genetically modify plants and animals that make up most of our every day products. Altering the genes is simply combining one good component with maybe a bad one to better the bad one. Or combining two good ones to make a superior one.

  • I've probably consumed enough GMO's at this point in my life, so I don't think it's a big deal. Additionally, there isn't much evidence to prove that genetically modified foods cause long term harm to your body. I think that like most other things, adding "Non-GMO" or other verbatim similar is marketing to make the food seem healthier.
