Should Presidents and World Leaders use Social Media

Social media use is growing and increasingly used to communicate.  In 2018, the Pew Research Center reported that the use of social media had grown from 5% in 2005 to 69% of the US populations in 2018 (Pew Research center, 2018.)  However growth is on the decline with 2019-2020 data revealing a 9.2% growth rate.  Since its inception in 1996, social media has managed to infiltrate half of the 7.7 billion people in the world. Social network platforms almost tripled their total user base in the last decade, from 970 million in 2010 to the number passing 3.81 billion users in 2020. These statistics show us how many people use social media.

Social media has some pros and cons. Some people can use social media as a positive in life and make others smile. You can use social media to play games with your family and friends. You could use social media for communication within our families, communties, and our country. Unfortunately, some people use social media in a negative way like starting rumors, scaming people, and bullying. Also, social media has been linked to child trafficing.

There have been effects from leader’s on social media, and the impact it has on everyone’s perceptions of leadership.  We do have the freedom of speech and so does our President, but he could be more professional about his post. But people think it is a good thing that he can use social media because he imform so many people about what he is thinking. Social media is one of the fastest ways to find information from around the world and people think it is a great way to know about new things happening in our world or country. But do you think that our president or any other world leaders should be on social media and post their thoughts?

I think that President Trump has used social media in a bad way. I think President Trump made posts for the public to read without thinking it through, or worrying about the repercussions.  This quickness to Tweet has led Trump to make comments in the past referring to his opponents as “Little Marco”, “Lyin’ Ted”, or “Crooked Hillary” and informing North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un that he has a Nuclear Button that is “bigger & more powerful”. Numerous people have encouraged Twitter to suspend President Trump for “increasing the risk of nuclear war”.  But many people loved being able to see the President’s clear thoughts. I think President Trump made our country a better place in some situations. I don't think that our President or any other world leader should use social media in a negative way.

What do you think about socail media?

Do you think social media affects people?

Should Presidents be able to use social media?

Should Presidents be able to use social media for fun?

  • Chase,

I really like your topic choice and your summary is well done! The one big issue is that you didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 30 points.

  • I do think World Leaders and Presidents should be able to use social media, but not like a middle schooler. They should have someone who manages their political account and then a private account for friends and family. This can't really be controlled, but I think it's the best option. Trump made a fool of himself and others several times because of social media. Had he only used it for campaiging and had some sort of manager, politics would be viewed as something more important and professional, versus a reality tv show with a raging drama queen/king. That is not to say Trump is the only one though. However, it's a necessity for politicians in this day and age because of how widely used it is. It's a huge component of getting young people to vote.

  • I think social media can be toxic and words, posts, videos, etc can be taken off of context. But social media does provide many benefits like providing news for all internet holders. I think that social media can affect people's life severly if people don't manage it. Presidents should be able to use social media but their post should be filtered because they have an effect on the larger scale. They should be able to use it for fun if the account is a private one.

  • I do think that presidents should be able to use social media. Nearly every person in the United States uses social media daily. Social media is a great way for political people to inform their citizens about what is going on. Although it is good to have fun, I don't think that they should use it for those purposes when they are in the public eye every day.

  • I think social media is a good way to get news out because word spreads fast on social media. I think social media effects people both negatively and positively. I think presidents should be able to use social media because they are the leader of our country. They can use social media for fun if they'd like but keep the fun on a professional lever.

  • I think social media is great until it is used in a wrong way which unfortunally there is people who will use it for the wrong reasons. Yes I believe social media affects people because it keeps people up reading and seeing posts about how they should be "normal" or how they aren't "pretty". I think presidents should be able to use social just like anyone else and they shouldn't be banned from certain platfroms.

  • I think social media is a really good way for presidents to get their word out. If you don't like what the leader is posting, then don't read what they are posting. Presidents shouldn't have to worry about being taken off an app for what they post, but they should still be responsible. They should definitely be allowed to use it for fun and communication.

  • I think Presidents should be able to use social media because lots of people use the apps so it gets word out fast. I think if you don't like what the leader is posting about then you could block them or unfollow them. I think that Presidents should be able to use social media for fun because they are just like any other person using the app.

  • Social media is a big part of our society today and many people depend on it for communication with family/friends. In some aspects social media does affect people because it can cause problems among people and bullying/harassing can arise from social media. I do think that Presidents should be able to use social media because it's freedom of speech and it's their choice whether or not they have it but it shouldn't be forbidden. Presidents should also have to closely track what they say on social media due to that could affect the presidential election and their outcome of them running for some Presidents.

  • Social media is an integral part of our modern day society and while I am not in full support of it, I think that it is not going away any time soon. We use it every day for communication, entertainment, and even research. I think that social media can have some negative implications as it can make people feel bad about theselves in comparision to others. I think presidents should be allowed to use social media, but they shouldn't be able to discuss sensitive topics, like the potential for nuclear war. They are the president of the United States, and need to act with a certain level of dignity. However, presidents are still people, and therefore should have the same access to social media as anyone else.
