Physical Education is something that is required for every student at Harlan Community to take every single year in high school, but is it really necessary? The CDC explains that taking some sort of physically educating class provides cognitive content and helps develop motor skills. There are so many benefits to taking a PE class, but there are also a few disadvantages. For example, some students want to take more academic classes and have an academic waiver, excluding them from PE, so that they can take far more classes. But in order to get that academic waiver, a student cannot have any study halls throughout the school day.
Benefits to having a PE class include: increasing every student's level of physical activity, improving their overall focus abilities in classes, and enhancing their grades and even standardized test scores, all according to the CDC. Taking a physical education class does not affect a student’s academic achievement negatively in any way. On the other hand, students who do not want to partake in a PE class, who are in other sports, find it ridiculous that they don’t have the choice whether they want to take that class or not.
Personally I think that PE is a nice class to take when you have a busy schedule and need a break, but I don’t think it should be forced upon all students. It’s important for everyone to be somewhat physically active for their health, but enforcing that in schools and not allowing students to opt out, unless they choose to have absolutely no study halls, gets to be a little over the board crazy. I think a physical education class should be very highly recommended to everyone, but it should not be mandatory in schools.
Do you think PE should be mandatory?
Do you have an academic waiver?
Do you like PE?

In college there is not requirement of a PE class, so why is it different now? If people really wanted to get active they would, and I personally think that they would be more likely to do so if it were strongly recommened instead of required.
Honestly I like pe class. It's easy and its a good way to socialize with the people around you. Although I like it, I don't think it should be a mandatory class you have to take to graduate. It's good exercise but really it shouldn't be that big of a deal when it comes to your future.
It really isn't a big deal once you're out of highschool and on your own making your own decisions.
I like pe because it is an easy class. But I think it should be required to do it one semester of the year. I like how we do it at our school i think it is the right way to do but it would be better if you could take 2 semesters instead of just one I think that it's kind of dumb.
If it were more of a choice rather than a requirement, I feel like students would be able to take 2 semesters instead of only being allowed to take one.
I like PE and its an easy class. We also have 3 types of PE classes so you have options on what pe you wat to take. I don't have a waiver I think that PE can give you time to talk to your friends if they are also in that class
I feel that P.E. class is a nice class to have to be able to have a break in your school day. However I feel that people that are in sports during the year shouldn’t have to take P.E. classes. As they are already getting physical activity during the day. I usually take Walking and Hiking P.E. because it is an easy class to get a P.E. credit.
I think that PE is a great class and I understand what the state of Iowa is doing making it madatory for every high schooler to take at least a semester. Trying to get kids to get their bodies moving is a good idea. I believe if you participate in at least one sport per semester you should get an waiver and not have to participate in PE.
I can see why they want to require it as well, but then I feel as if they required it for everyone but people participating in sports, we'd see a lot more people who don't like PE class in sports who are "injured" or don't show up just to get out of it.
I think PE should be mandatory. I feel this way because the school offers so many different options like games, walking, and strength and conditioning. I do not have an academic waiver. I do like PE cause you can really do whatever you want in that class.
