Should PE Classes be Mandatory?

Physical Education is something that is required for every student at Harlan Community to take every single year in high school, but is it really necessary? The CDC explains that taking some sort of physically educating class provides cognitive content and helps develop motor skills. There are so many benefits to taking a PE class, but there are also a few disadvantages. For example, some students want to take more academic classes and have an academic waiver, excluding them from PE, so that they can take far more classes. But in order to get that academic waiver, a student cannot have any study halls throughout the school day.

Benefits to having a PE class include: increasing every student's level of physical activity, improving their overall focus abilities in classes, and enhancing their grades and even standardized test scores, all according to the CDC. Taking a physical education class does not affect a student’s academic achievement negatively in any way. On the other hand, students who do not want to partake in a PE class, who are in other sports, find it ridiculous that they don’t have the choice whether they want to take that class or not.

Personally I think that PE is a nice class to take when you have a busy schedule and need a break, but I don’t think it should be forced upon all students. It’s important for everyone to be somewhat physically active for their health, but enforcing that in schools and not allowing students to opt out, unless they choose to have absolutely no study halls, gets to be a little over the board crazy. I think a physical education class should be very highly recommended to everyone, but it should not be mandatory in schools.

Do you think PE should be mandatory?

Do you have an academic waiver?

Do you like PE?

  • I personally do not think they should be mandated, but I think they should be reccomended. For some kids, PE is their only form of exercise. I think it should be mandated for people who aren't going to take advantage of more academic classes though.

    • I think PE is a great class, and especially for those who aren't active on their own, but I also feel like what you exert your body to do should be more of a choice rather than a requirement. People who don't like exercise shouldn't be forced to do so because later in life they won't want to do it on their own.

  • I personally think that physical education classes should be mandatory because if you like to get the exercise you can do it on your own time. I think that we could use that class period for something more productive than we would use in the future. I like the fact that pe gives you a break from sitting down in classrooms all day but I think you should be able to pick if you want to do it or not.

    • I completely agree. Some people would rather be more productive in the school day, and then exercise on their own time and do their own thing to stay physically active.

  • Personally I do not think that PE should be something that is mandatory under certain conditions. I think that if you participate in a sport both semesters you shouldn't have to take a PE class. It should be something that is optional for students as they would already be active with the sports they are in.

    • That is a really great point. Many students put in hours of practice in a week, so why is PE so necessary to take in their position?

  • While I like PE, I dont really think it should be mandatory. PE is a good choice if someone is not very active outside of school.  I dont have an academic waiver this year but I will for next year. Not that it is diffucult to get one but it would be easier if you could just not sign up for PE.

    • I agree, a lot more students are getting an academic waiver just so they don't have to worry about a PE class fitting in their schedule, so why even mandate it?

  • I like PE. I think it is fun and kind of breaks up your day so it is not all classes. I think PE should be mandatory, because otherwise certain people would not have any physical activity. I do think people should be able to get academic wavier because I don't think PE should restrict them from taking a class they're really interested in.

  • I am getting an academic waiver for next year to fit more classes into my schedule. I should have gotten one this year to take biology and chemistry to have more classes open for next year. It would be easier if PE was not mandatory, but it is not difficult to get an acadecmic waiver.
