Should PE Classes be Mandatory?

Physical Education is something that is required for every student at Harlan Community to take every single year in high school, but is it really necessary? The CDC explains that taking some sort of physically educating class provides cognitive content and helps develop motor skills. There are so many benefits to taking a PE class, but there are also a few disadvantages. For example, some students want to take more academic classes and have an academic waiver, excluding them from PE, so that they can take far more classes. But in order to get that academic waiver, a student cannot have any study halls throughout the school day.

Benefits to having a PE class include: increasing every student's level of physical activity, improving their overall focus abilities in classes, and enhancing their grades and even standardized test scores, all according to the CDC. Taking a physical education class does not affect a student’s academic achievement negatively in any way. On the other hand, students who do not want to partake in a PE class, who are in other sports, find it ridiculous that they don’t have the choice whether they want to take that class or not.

Personally I think that PE is a nice class to take when you have a busy schedule and need a break, but I don’t think it should be forced upon all students. It’s important for everyone to be somewhat physically active for their health, but enforcing that in schools and not allowing students to opt out, unless they choose to have absolutely no study halls, gets to be a little over the board crazy. I think a physical education class should be very highly recommended to everyone, but it should not be mandatory in schools.

Do you think PE should be mandatory?

Do you have an academic waiver?

Do you like PE?

  • Exercise is important, however, the number of times I've missed an assignment because of my study hall being replaced by a PE class was mind-boggling. I do not have an academic waiver. I do enjoy PE but I don't believe I should be forced to do it, I want to be able to put in the classes I like and not have them be taken up by something I can do on my own time.

    • I agree completely, having a packed schedule because of a PE class is crazy and hard to manage with time.

  • I personally think PE should not be mandatory. Students who don't want to take it or don't like active things, shouldn't be forced to take the class.  Other reasons are that they are busy and they could take an extra class they want to take or need to take. I don't mind PE.

  • I don't think it should be mandatory as long as the student is in a sport or is staying active and healthy. This is because a lot of kids have busy schedules and would prefer a study hall over a mandatory P.E

  • I think that P.E. should be mandatory atleast once a year because it benefits some kids that aren't very active otherwise. And it stops some kids from being lazy. I like P.E because of  the games and other fun things to do in there. P E. should be mandatory.

  • I don't think there's really any reason to make PE classes mandatory. Exercise is a personal responsibility to stay fit and on top of your health. I think making it optional or even recommended would still interest kids who want to take a PE class.

    • I agree, and I think recommending it would peak more interest in kids instead of them feeling like you are being forced to do it.

  • I don't think it should be mandatory because a lot of students already participate in sports or do physical activity on their own. I think it should be recommended to students who have open classes. I like the PE classes at our school because they offer lifting in the morning, lifting during the day, a games/activities PE, and just a walking PE.

    • I like what our school offers to students for PE, but like you said it should be recommended because a lot of people take care of their physical activity on their own already.
